The fight to get rid of Thames is going to be an uphill battle of proportions we cannot fathom. Most area businesses are spewing forth pro-Shelby propaganda to their employees, who are dutifully repeating said propaganda ad nasuem. I talked to a bank employee today who was adamantly pro-Shelby--" He's making professors work for thier pay, that is the only reason they are angry with Thames' administration." Other area businesses are doing much the same- and the unsuspecting, uninformed public soaks all of this pro-Shelby vomit like a sponge. The Thames admininstration is doing a stellar job in one area, and one area alone--PR. Then again, Mississippi is flooded with uneducated people who lack the ability to think for themselves, so Shelby's PR buffoons have a relatively easy task.
WE MUST get the national media involved on a larger scale. WE MUST get national organizations, as bad as I dislike some of them, involved!
WE MUST not give up- even though we will not be able to rid ourselves of Thames by relying on resources within our state borders!
I'll get off my normally quiet soapbox now,as I have to study. I really wish I could find these "lazy liberal arts professors" that do not give tests or paper assignments!
Well, TomP, rest assured. The USM chapter of the ACLU is now in the works. Shelby wanted a "Union", we"ll give him one!!!! Look for more info in the next couple of days.
P.S.
The only "lazy professors" that I know of are those that can't even walk to the commons to get their lunch, yet must have them catered by a man with a white coat and a pushcart with table linen.
we all know how they love to take a story and run 10 times around the world with it, and they always search for the dirt on the person featured. A few dozen emails carefully picked from those submitted by readers should do...

Let's let these businesses know that we're watching them. If we all take our money out of the bank that openly supports Shelby, ....
Anyone who is well-educated in the facts of this whole ordeal cannot possibly be pro-Shelby. As the whole story spreads, there will be less and less Shelby supporters. I do agree, however, that national media coverage would greatly increase our influence. On a side note, I was eating in the Commons when I looked up and saw my friends and I on the TV screen. Apparently the MTV university channel picked up the protest for a day or so. I emailed CNN about this, but never got a reply. I haven't seen anything from them about this...YET!
The most powerful article is the one in the Chronicle of Higher Education. For people who are looking to get this story out, that article is currently the most credible source. Across all disciplines, every academic, from untenured assistant professors to university presidents to board members, reads and it and respects it. This website provides a worthwhile forum and the link to the Chronicle article is a tremendous addition.
