Here's a copy of my letter to the editor (already sent it to the H.A. and the Sun Herald) regarding Shelby's refusal to speak with faculty members reported in today's H.A:
“At The University of Southern Mississippi, we celebrate and encourage open, honest debate, engagement, participation and constructive conversations. These are the hallmarks of an educational institution and a free society - values that we as Americans hold dear; values that as a scientist, teacher and administrator I have spent my life advancing.” These words come from an email that Shelby F. Thames sent to all faculty, staff, and students at The University of Southern Mississippi on Thursday, March 11, 2004. I have one question to pose to Dr. Thames in light of his call for engagement and constructive conversations: if you truly believe what you said to the USM community on March 11, then why on March 26 do we see reported in The Hattiesburg American that the Faculty Senate was notified that regularly scheduled monthly meetings with you “would not be a good idea at this time?” When and how do you plan to repair communications with your faculty, Dr. Thames? As an alumna of USM, I am deeply concerned by Dr. Thames’ blatant refusal to communicate on any level with his faculty (other than through threatening statements in the media). There is no successful leadership model I’m aware of where workers must take out an ad in a newspaper in order to have a dialogue with their boss. The real question is: what does Shelby Thames have to hide? It is time for the College Board to clean up the mess that Shelby Thames has made at USM. I implore them to do it sooner rather than later so that healing can begin, and perhaps then 112 quality faculty members can be found who are willing to help rebuild our great university.
A question for you, though. Why not send it to the Clarion Ledger, too?
It has the greatest state-wide circulation. Editors of newspapers even in the Delta are chiming in on the Shelby crisis. I think your letter needs to be read far and wide across the state.

Just sent it off to the CL, too. We'll see who prints it first!

Great! My guess: it will appear on Tuesday in the Hat Am and the Sun Herald. On Wednesday, it will appear in the C-L. As long as it appears before IHL trustees meet Thursday, you're in good shape.
