I saw James Hall (RTF Dept.) retired at the end of '02-'03...was that planned anyway, or did Thames being hired have any effect?

I hate that we're loosing Jensen. We have one of the few military history graduate programs in the nation...now we're short a great military historian.
I was thinking seriously about staying here for grad school because of the military history curriculum, but I guess it would be pointless to do so now.

Mike Smith, professor of Criminal Justice, is retiring a year earlier than originally planned. That leaves CJ with a doctoral program and no full professors.

Is his wife retiring as well? That would be a huge loss to the College of Education

I could not help but notice that my name and my wife's name were not among the talent USM has lost to the Thames reign. Assuming we are "talent," which may be a leap, then we were also among those thus "lost."

We left for a number of reasons, most of them directly or indirectly related to the behavior of the Thames administration at USM. Many of the events are fairly well known to all, others were and are only known to a few people. All reeked of exactly the sort of corruption, inept and tyrannical management that has come to characterize the USM administration. Unfortunately, this also looks bad for USM and the State of Mississippi. (Besides, it was not at all difficult to find a better salary and much, much better working conditions.)

The longer that Shelby Thames remains in office, the longer it will take to heal the wounds he has inflicted on the faculty and, ultimately, the students. My advice to both faculty and students, for whatever it is worth, is that you vote with your feet and leave USM before you are stigmatized or beaten into depression as well.

For the record, Mary Robison is NOT leaving because of the current situation. (Although it most certainly didn't help any, either.) The University of Florida pursued HER, she did not actually go looking for another position. She was simply offered a fantastic, immediately tenured, and relatively high profile position that she couldn't possibly pass up!

Add Dr. Gloria Applet-Slick to the list of soon to be retirees. And BTW, she actually WAS a tenured professor in CISE!! A great one too. She will be missed.  Notice that the website for them has been changed since the Fire Shelby exclusive. Cudos to Fire Shelby.
