I would be interesed in knowing how many staff members, particularly those involved in purchasing and financial management, have left during the last two years. This is strictly rumor, but I have heard that one high-ranking person was locked out of his office and subsequently sent to some backroom office somewhere to wait for retirement because he was unwilling to play loose with the rules, specifically the rules as in state law. A lot of people have stories to tell, but until they are willing to step up and tell them, the public does not have anything approaching a clear idea of what is really going on. It seems to take a huge transgression to get any media attention, but the faculty vote was based on thousands of little ones occurring over a long period of time.
From what I understand, of the 5 people who were in Financial Affairs when Thames came into office, there will only be ONE in the fall. Prior to his taking office, the department was stable for years.
So much turnover in the Business and Finance area is suspicious. State universities are subject to strict rules in some areas (tracking incoming payments, competitive bidding for contracts, regulations on purchasing, etc.) but the rules governing their financial reports are quite lax.
If Business and Finance people are being pushed out that means that the upper administration (i.e., Shelby Thames) wants to be able to do stuff that violates the strict rules.
One element in the public protests against the Thames regime should be a demand that the office of the state (auditor? comptroller? I don't know what that official is called in Mississippi) audit the accounts at USM.
