Does anybody know the story on what happened to the Albertson building? I heard it was sold to USM at an inflated price to be used as the nursing building, but then I see it is still not converted. Last week I heard that it had been traded for a motel site on Hardy and 49. Does anybody know the inside scoop on all that trading? I can't imagine Shelby has the business support he has because he is such a captivating personality. The University has millions of dollars to spend. Does anyone have the capacity to investigate how that money has been spent over the years, particularly now? We buy a lot of vehicles. How is the decision made where they are purchased? Just asking.
I heard that Thames traded the Albertson's building to Forrest General Hospital for some Hardy Street property they owned. If he did, it better be a supersized piece of land to compensate.
Would the real estate transactions be a matter of public record? I am not knowledgeable about this, but it seems to me that most real estate deals do become a matter of publc record, for I can go on the internet and get a list of property that sold in my neighborhood and what the selling price was. There may be nothing of interest in the Albertson Building transactions, but it would be interesting to know what it sold for before USM bought it, how much USM paid for it, who made money and how much, and the same for the most recent transaction.
The Hattiesburg American reported that Ray Sims bought the Albertson's building for $1.2 million. If I remember rightly, his was the only bid.
I think that is the same Ray Sims who owns a contracting company that is a significant supporter of Southern Miss. Maybe just athletics, I don't know.
I have heard that Thames asked the USM Foundation to buy the building for $4 million from Sims. Someone at the Foundation negotiated instead, and the purchase price ended up at $1.4 million or thereabouts.
Perhaps someone at the Foundation could comment, especially if I am mistaken.
Perhaps the university unloaded the Albertson's building in order to secure the additional funding needed to break ground on the Trent Lott Center for Economic Development. Thames could be under pressure from Trent Lott and Haley Barbour (who was in charge of the national fundraising campaign for the Lott Center prior to being elected governor) to get this going NOW.
It seems like the Lott Center project has been pulled from the last couple of IHL board agendas due to a lack of funding needed to begin construction.
Several weeks ago, I noticed one of those elegant vinyl signs hanging from the front of the building proclaiming it to be the future home of the nursing program. Did I miss something?
There are two classic "Shelbyisms" here in the Albertson's affair.
First, Nursing (including the director) was not told they had lost their building until recently. Someone who had heard a rumor asked the Dean about it in a meeting. Then it was told. Months of planning was done, time and money now wasted.
Then Nursing found out in the Hattiesburg American that the 3.5 million set aside to help with construction of the new Nursing Building was being put before the IHL to ask them if USM could divert it to the Trent Lott Economic Center instead. Surprise!
You know, there must be a lot more faculty, students and community need for economists than there is for nurses! NOT!
Now, it looks like they will get the Southern Aire Motel site and sizable support from Forrest General to build a new School of Nursing just South of Walgreens on Hwy 49, but this is NEW construction (not a removation), and will take a LONG TIME to get approved, built, etc.
If this is the case, I think it is really intersting that the media has not picked up on this. Could the close ties with ADP help in keeping this hushed? There was such wonderful coverage of the initial buy... i.e. we are filling empty buildings, etc. The nursing program just gets screwed...AGAIN.
Did you know that the current Nursing building (Harkins Hall) is infested with Toxic Mold and Asbestos. I was told by an instructor that three long time (now retired) teachers either have cancer or have died from cancer linked to the Asbestos!!!

LOL! At least THEY didn't call us conspiracy theorists!
My favorite Woody Allen quote:
Just because I'm paranoid doesn't mean they aren't out to get me.
