The Student Printz wrote an article about Thames' time as a VP on the Coast. The story appeared just before Thames was selected as USM's dictator. The artice's headline was ominous – "Thames may bring micromanagement."
A prof. who worked on the Coast during Thames' time there said how it was like to have to sign out with his secretary when he had to go pee.

Go ask Thames or Dr. Lucas why Dr. Lucas forced Thames to "step down" from adm. back to teaching in 1991. I think IHL made a tepid attempt to find out but records were missing. Lucas knows full well. Others like Kirkpatric also know. The "official" reason was "mismanagement". THAT is bad enough, but the REAL reason was............. You know that movie sex, lies, and videotapes?"
Hey query (or anyone for that matter), have you ever heard a story about Thames' control over Gulf Park and the suicide of Joe E. Holloway? Holloway was a former administrator for whom the Gulf Park Ed/Psych buliding and a scholarship are named after.
There are lots of (alleged) stories involving SFT. Even if only half of them are true, there's still plenty enough for a book. Exit 13, The Sequel.
Why not ask any faculty member who was around at the time? It was pretty widely discussed -- whispered, actually, because folks were just as afraid of SFT then as now.
Part of that rumor was that there was a significant "contribution" made to the USM Foundation to ensure that records would be hard to locate in the future. Dunno if the Foundation records are open to the public or if the donation existed at all, but that was the rumor.
If that is true (or partly true), it would be in line with events surrounding SFT's annointment as president. Check out the name on the new field house. That name was bought. Add up those contributions & you'll know exactly what the presidency of USM costs. Might be useful to any aspiring administrators to start saving & investing now

And then there's the legend of the Persian Rug that now is on the floor of the conference room in the Dome. Seems that SFT somehow had that included in a grant long ago listed under "necessary equipment". Questions were raised and Lucas moved the rug over from Shelby's roost to the Dome. How polymers and persian rugs equate . . . .

Amazing. Simply amazing. Other departments have to go through the red tape to order friggin staples, and he got away with ordering a persian rug? My god.
