The Sun Herald just reported it.  He is going to be the new Superintendent at Parchman.  They actually have a quote of him saying Parchman is"his first love.."

I'm amazed he's stayed this long.  Remember the 30 pieces of silver incident?

I feel stupid for asking, but what is the "thirty pieces of silver" incident?

Ditto on the 30 pieces of silver incident?? Que pasa? Also,
of the 7 faculty members in Criminal Justice before Shelby's reorganization, only 4 are scheduled to return in the fall. And there is still time for that number 4 to go down.....

I'm just an outsider, but I have to say that it seems kind of sad that someone would prefer working at a prison to working at USM!

Don Cabana was the president of Faculty Senate back in 2002 or 03, I think.  Anyway, I can't remember the exact transgression, but he sided with the administration on some issue, and, in return, some anonymous person left him "30 pieces of silver" a la Judas in his mailbox at his department.  Someone else might be able to remember the details of the incident better than I do.  I think it was reported in the Printz, though I couldn't give you an exact date.

Cabana was seen as a quisling during his year as faculty senate president. In private conversations he was often very critical of the administration, but in public he was an apologist. The 30 pieces of silver incident came after he privately encouraged a number of faculty members to prepare for a vote of no confidence for President Thames at a special meeting of the FS he called. At the meeting he suddenly did a 180 leaving the faculty members swinging in the wind.

Dr. Cabana worked at Parchman before coming to USM. I'm not suggesting that the current unstable situation at USM or the "30 pieces of silver incident" didn't influence Cabana's decision to go back to work for the Dept. of Corrections, but I think it's not any more remarkable than, say, a business professor deciding to go to work for a bank. A lot of folks go from "the field" to academe' & back again after they discover that universities aren't all they're cracked up to be.

In Cabana's case, he won't lose a minute of "paid time" on his retirement plan, either. And if he makes more money as bossman at the Big House, I say more power to him, good for him & so long it's been good to know ya.

When asked about how conditions at Parchman would be compared to the current USM environment and he replied that the inmates would be far easier to be around than the current administration.

Here's the latest on Don Cabana.  Note at the end of the article where he says that he will leave the dept. in "good shape."  Aren't half the faculty leaving???
