. . . to write letters to the Powers That Be (including, for example, the Governor and Attorney General) thanking them for the steps the state has taken so far to ensure a fair hearing for the fired professors.  It might be useful in such letters to point out that if the professors ultimately prevail, USM in particular and Mississippi in general can come out of this whole mess looking reasonably good -- by making a silk purse out of a sow's ear.  Of course, the silk purse would have some extra nice tassles on it if President Thames is sent into retirement -- THEN the state would really appear to have reaffirmed its commitment to a high standard of higher education.

Basically a good idea, but I wouldn't go overboard with it. What we are assuming ensures "a fair hearing" could be smoke & mirrors.

I don't trust the AG's office any more than I trust any other building full of lawyers. The AG is elected & the same factor (money) affects the AG in the same way it affects every other politician. The same AG that appointed Anderson to oversee the hearing originally appointed an assistant who was already representing the USM administration. Hood got caught by the public on that one & threw up a smokescreen.

I'm not getting overly optimistic about Anderson running the hearing.

The important thing to remember is that Anderson is an African American.  Thames, for those who didn't know, is a notorious racist, of the old-school sort that uses the n-word to describe African American people in general.  Being as he's friends with the racist grandfathers of many friends, this is probably more than a rumor.

I'm more optimistic with Anderson now overseeing the hearings than before. But will someone please tell me why AG Hood was on campus yesterday?
