Billy Hewes quote in Hattiesburg American

"All that (Thames) wants from these people is a day's work for a day's pay. If they don't want to give that they probably ought to move on," said Hewes, 65, who is a USM graduate "We need people who're going to have some respect for authority."

Thank you, sir, may I have another?

How exactly does Mr. Hewes KNOW that's all Mr. Thames wants from the faculty?  Or is this another example of SPIN!!!  USM needs a "no spin zone."

What an idiot Billy Hewes must be.  Either that or so far up Thames' hindquarters that he can't see the light of day and the actual reality of the situation at USM.  What kind of kickbacks must he be getting from ST?

"Retired with the rank of Captain in the U.S. Army Transportation Corps at age 28"

Well, he and Dvorak seem to be of the same ilk.  Since you have to be in the Army for at least 20 years in order to retire - I guess he got out of OCS at the age of 8.

Hilarious.

Hewes is a jerk & that's about the nicest thing one can say about him. I've been saying that since I first met him 10 years ago.

I've never figured out how a BS degree in personnel management & a career in real estate qualify anybody to issue important opinions about the operation of research universities, but hey, money talks...

You can read his resume' here. Cute how membership in Leo Seals' Great Southern Club is listed before his educational information.

Do I have this right: this Billy Hewes on the council is a Jr. and he has a son in the MS State Senate who is the III?  I think that the pater familias is William G. Hewes, a chancery court judge in Gulfport in the 1960s and admirer and participant in the MS Sovereignty Commission (the racist anti-desegregation spy agency created by the MS Leg.).  If I have this right, it helps explain Billy Jr.'s and Billy III's political/racial views.

Look at these links for the online Mississippi Soveriegnty Commission Database (its always fun to play with the names and see people we know : http://mdah.state.ms.us/arlib/contents/er/index.html

I'm bumping this thread up since Billy Hewes is again the focus of (much served) attention.

I have always just LOVED Hewes' expression "a day's work for a day's pay"  -- staff have heard it ad nauseum; faculty grading papers at 2 am must love it too.  Most of us would really like a day's pay for a day's work.

There's definitely a quid pro quo relationship between Thames and Hewes.

Here are some interesting tidbits:

Under Thames' watch, Hewes was appointed to the Southern Miss Athletics Council as a voting non-faculty member:

Back Row (from left): Dr. Dennis Phillips, Billy Hewes, Richard Giannini, Robert Boothe, Robert Pierce, Larry Payne
Front Row (from left): Earl Marshall, Pat Ferlise, Dr. M. J. McMahon, David Hamm, Dr. David Wheeler
