I know (through a friend) they had a meeting (I believe) today with the CJ majors about the situation.  He told me last week that Dr. Taylor plans to retire and "sit out" for about 9 months and then return to the university.  It's assumed that Dr. Smith is retiring because it's just that time.  I'll let you know when I ask him about the meeting.
