In the past two days I have sent out e-mail messages to close to 200 officers of national scholarly organizations, alerting them to the crisis at USM. I urge others to use the remaining days before the hearing to contact as many such people as possible so that when the verdict is rendered, the eyes of the nation will be on USM and the IHL will know that its decision will be under a national microscope. Finding e-mail addresses is very simple thanks to google; transferring the different addresses to an e-mail message takes very little time. Every other "outsider" who has written to me about this situation has been shocked by the mess at USM; the recent actions of the university administration are tarnishing USM's reputation throughout the country. The IHL, however, has a wonderful opportunity to turn this all around and make itself and USM look very good (or at least a lot less bad). In writing to the members of the IHL, it may be good to mention to them that they have a chance to come out of this looking like heroes if they do the right thing.
Good for you, Robert Evans! I applaud your energy and direction on this. I'm afraid both my energy and direction has been flagging recently (due to end of semester crunch, personal duties, etc. etc.). You've inspired me to renew my energy to fight the good fight. Bravo!

Thanks for your kind words! I usually do this sort of thing very late in the evening (or rather: very early in the morning) when I am too tired to grade, write, read, or do much of anything else than surf the net. It takes very little time and effort and helps give me the feeling that I am doing SOMETHING, from my distant vantage point, to help two very good men.
