SOUTHERN MISS HOLDS OPEN CASTING CALLS FOR THREE UNIVERSITY COMMERCIALS
HATTIESBURG -- Faculty, staff, and students at The University of Southern Mississippi are invited to open casting calls this week for three upcoming commercials promoting the university. The casting calls, held from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Thursday, will take place in the Commons Banquet Room A in Hattiesburg and in the AEC Rotunda on the Gulf Coast campus. In conjunction with GodwinGroup of Jackson, Southern Miss is continuing to promote its new brand image and is focusing on aggressively recruiting new students. The commercials will specifically target incoming freshmen, nontraditional and professional students, while furthering the world-class image of The University of Southern Mississippi, said Lisa Mader, director of Marketing and Public Relations. "This is a great opportunity to showcase the bright and talented Southern Miss community," Mader said. President Shelby F. Thames said, "Southern Miss has many programs, degrees, and certifications to meet the needs of our community, state and nation. We want to ensure that anyone looking to further their education knows what Southern Miss has to offer." Mader said she encourages "everyone and anyone interested to attend these open casting calls Thursday to assist us in recruiting the best and the brightest." No audition pieces or previous experience is necessary. Participants must be available for commercial shoots on Tuesday, May 4 or Wednesday, May 5. The Southern Miss commercials will start airing this summer. For more information, call (601) 266-5304.
The reason they need a casting call is they wouldn't recognize "the best and brightest" if they ran into them. They simply understand they they need to "look" bright. Sorry, feeling very cynical at the moment. . . . but why not show the real USM, not a bunch of good looking people pretending to be smart? I wonder if they will cast any African Americans or women (there were no women on the last round of billboards that I saw. . . )
Actually, this tells me that they know there is an enrollment problem (this is a clear admission on their part). They are scrambling now. The ship is sinking and they know it.
I love it...a casting call for the "best and brightest" exactly one week before a hearing for a vendetta firing of 2 of the "best and brightest." This is looking more and more like a bad horror movie every day (can you say "Stepford Students?").

If I were on campus, I would go. I would wear my pro-Glamser-Stringer tee shirt. I would apply for a role in the disinfomercial, and, when denied because of my shirt, I would ask if USM were attempting to silence my rights to political views, which, by law, they can't.

I hate to say this, but USM right now is probably getting more world-wide publicity than it ever has before, and it is entirely negative. Much as SFT probably truly does love the university (according to his own lights), he has probably done more to damage it in the eyes of the nation and world than just about anyone else, ever. What a very sad irony to this whole affair! However, as I have tried to stress elsewhere, it is not too late for the IHL to make both USM and the whole state look very good in the eyes of the watching world. In another irony, SFT has presented the state with a golden opportunity to shine -- but only by rejecting the conduct of SFT. Shakespeare could not have contrived a more complex or ironic plot!
Even better, wait until you're casted, then on the day of shooting show up with your shirt. That way they really can't turn you down without looking like they're trying to deny you your rights!
