From Myron Henry, Faculty Senate President to 4+3:
Good Evening Ms. Lisa Mader:
Increasing numbers of faculty are expressing their concern to me as Faculty Senate president that the room where the hearing for Drs. Glamser and Stringer is scheduled to take place will not accommodate very many people. Is this true, and what are the arrangements? The administration asked for an open hearing, and in this context, every effort should be made by the administration to provide sufficient seating for faculty and others in the actual room of the hearing. As the elected representatives of the faculty, I request on behalf of the executive officers for assurances that we will have seats in the room of the hearing and that the room also accommodate reasonable numbers of our faculty. I look forward to your timely response. Thank you. Myron Henry, Faculty Senate President
For every public act, like this Mader letter, there are a hundred behind the scenes actvities - a special thanks to Dr. Henry and the entire Faculty Senate (and other facuty governance committees) for working so hard during these difficult times.
Although I'm an outsider, I too would like to say how impressed I have been by the conduct of the Faculty Senate in this whole mess. Their performance seems -- from my distant vantage-point -- to have been exemplary. I still think that someone needs to come in and write a book about what has been going on at USM; as the Grandmother says in "A Good Man is Hard to Find," "It would be very educational." (I hope I am remembering her words correctly; she is one of my favorite non-real people.)
Thank you for recognizing the difficult work we do. I have to add, also, that I am a Republican, am from a military family, would be considered a patriotic Southerner, a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Daughters of the Confederacy. It is because I hold the values of our land dear, that I view Dr. Thames' actions contrary to one of the most wonderful things about America: The character of its Universities and the matter of shared governance conventions in the Academy.
The hearing will take place in Union Room B, which has 36 open seats to be filled on a first come, first serve basis. The gameroom downstairs will be open and have video and audio of the proceedings and will seat 150 people.

She probably has her email account set up to fire back autoresponses to any email that has "hearing" in the body.

Thank you, Senator! By the way, your post reminded me of a fact that is very relevant to this whole mess: American universities are routinely ranked among the very best and most successful aspects of American culture; although the U.S. is not known for our superior secondary schools, we ARE known and valued throughout the world for our excellent system of higher education. People come from throughout the globe to study here. One reason for the excellence of America's universities is that they are not (by and large) as corrupt as certain other institutions. President Thames's actions are contributing to the subversion of one of the most distinctive and valuable cultures in American life. Perhaps that is one reason that so many academics outside of Hattiesburg are very concerned about what is happening there. Again, thanks to you and the other senators for fighting the good fight! You are in the front ranks; the rest of us are support personnel.
You are exactly right. It is always important to keep our eyes on the BIG PICTURE. Our universities are a valuable part of the cultural richness of America. However, If one thinks about it, Univerisites are also a valuable part of the moral richness, intellectual richness, and are also part of America's economic richness. There needs to be a balance between each of these, however, or the institution is no longer a University.
I am all about making money. But, using strip mining methods and octopus methods and ham fisted methods and cronyism, and double dealing to extract USM's value will only leave an empty shell of a University; which in reality is NO Longer a University. And sadly, that depleted and USED University will simply be another business venture run to it's completion.
Universities should be and ARE more than simple business ventures. That is why so many Universities are State owned and operated. The PEOPLE see the value in having an institution remain viable in the long term, separate from private interests, for the good of everyone in the State at present and for the future generations of Mississippians. Indeed, for Universities, the value is in perpetuating the whole of what we recognize as "America".
(This is the part where the Flag drops down in the background, and the music starts )
Seriously, being financially sound is important for Universities. The profitability gained from Universities is more than financial, though, and to run a University with economic development as THE REAL priority, and not a concurrent priority with moral, educational, and scholarship advancement is wrong, and again brings us to the fact that it is not a real university; it becomes more of a Foundation/University, or a Factory/University, or a Business/University.
The problem with tampering with USM is that the Taxpayers of the State will, in the end, be left with one less University. It will have, however, a State supported Psuedo-University, which is really just a big State Supported Business venture. South Mississippians will not have the true University they and their parents and grandparents paid for in which to educate their children and their children's children. (Please take note, South Miss. State Representatives and Senators) .
If Dr. Thames does not begin to balance his leadership responsibilities in terms of ALL of the purposes of a University with those of it's financial potential, then USM is lost until he is removed. He does not even have good advisors to help in this area, or maybe they are/were there, they have been censored, fired, retired, replaced, or left.
There is a Southern Saying in describing people like Dr. Thames who cannot change (nor see the need to change) in the face of circumstances that require a change, it is "That's just the way he is. He has always been thataway. He just can't help himself."
Hopefully, Students, Parents, Taxpayers and our elected Representatives will take another look at, and stop the beginnings of the Psuedo-University Phenomenon, and The New State-run Business that is USM.
Then we can get back to our primary business of educating our citizens (which wasn't broke to begin with at USM- we had a great reputation for teaching and mentoring and scholarship, and we were all trying to improve in each of these areas, in the early and pre-Shelby days) in the ways that have a more whole and long lasting value to society.
By the way, Dr. Henry is just who we needed at this time. Divine Intervention is the way I see it.

Your voice speaks volumes and your aim is true. I respect you so much, and I know who you are.

This is worth saying again! And, I would like to add that due to the courage and integrity of Drs. Stringer and Glamser, that we have Taken a bit of the "Occupied University back". My heartfelt thanks to the Distinguished Professors of English and Sociology. (And I will be writing my check for the Fund, now that I have gotten paid)
To quote someone very wise on this board: "No Quarter".
