In this week's issue of THE INDEPENDENT, publisher Bob Pittman's column is about the recent College Board appointments. It appears that factions within the USM alumni were divided in their support of two candidates: Bob Mixon and Jim Payne (a third name, Ed Langton [local banking executive] was submitted by the alumni, but apparently he was not as "politically involved" as the other candidates).
Jim Payne even became a resident of Forrest County in order for Governor Barbour to make him the "south Mississippi" appointment, since Barbour had decided to make the Jackson State alumnus the "central Mississippi" appointment.
However, the decision became "even more delicate" due to the divided support between the Mixon and Payne supporters. The Mixon group is generally pro-Shelby, while the pro-Payne people are more supportive of the faculty.
"In the end, to avoid further turmoil in the Governor's office and on the Board of Trustees, as well as among USM alumni, the Governor turned northward to Laurel and appointed Robin Robinson to the Board position sought by the various Hattiesburg groups."

I found that strange, too. The exact quote in the column is "the Payne group leans toward faculty members who have been suspended by Thames and who have been told they will be fired."

That is huge, folks. The Paynes are bigtime donors to USM. BIG TIME. Maybe Krandall is jealous of their influence.

It's linked to the LBN page right now. By the way, it's a huge file and I have low transfer allocation--if the page exceeds allocation, you can click back later and it should be up.
