Statement by the John Donne Society Executive Committee on the Suspension and Potential Termination of University of Southern Mississippi Professors Frank Glamser and Gary Stringer

March 12, 2004

As an academic community, we were shocked to learn of the sudden suspension and potential termination of Professor Frank Glamser and Professor Gary Stringer, two longtime tenured faculty members at the University of Southern Mississippi.

The international John Donne Society has held its annual February conference at the Gulf Park Campus of USM since 1985. We have always felt welcome and celebrated the hospitality that the University has offered us as scholars from around the world, welcome, that is, until the incredible actions taken by President Shelby Thames last week. USM HAD enjoyed a reputation amongst us as a university that supported serious scholarly work. However, that reputation is now in danger of being undermined throughout the global academic community.

As a past President of the John Donne Society and General Editor of the NEH-sponsored Donne Variorum Project, Professor Stringer is a highly regarded and distinguished scholar with an international reputation. The implications of President Thames’ ill-considered actions for Professor Stringer’s work on the Donne Variorum Project, in particular, is cause of considerable concern throughout the international scholarly community. Under Professor Stringer’s leadership, the project has received nearly $1million in grant support from the National Endowment for the Humanities over the years.

Professor Stringer is valued throughout our academic and scholarly community as a man of great integrity, care, conscientiousness and dedication to the University of Southern Mississippi, to the academic profession, and to all of us who respect truth, academic freedom, and honest inquiry.

As representatives of the Executive Board of the John Donne Society, whose members come from throughout the world, we would like to register our outrage at the unconscionable action by the USM President, Shelby Thames. Escorting senior faculty off campus by police, locking them out of their offices, where years of research and scholarship are housed, can only quell honest debate, cause fear amongst all members of the academic community, and undermine the very essence of a university.

We urge the Board of Trustees of the Mississippi Institutions of Higher Learning to overturn this egregious decision before it’s too late!
