I keep waiting for someone to hoist a Nazi flag on one (or more) of the flagpoles in front of the dome one weekend.  The flag poles are usually vacant on weekends.

That might be considered a bit harsh and might offend even some folks who don't like Shelby. But hoisting a black flag would be interesting -- or a pirate flag?

Let's be careful with these Nazi comparisons, and it's probably best to avoid the swastika.  As you've probably heard, 'If _______ (in this case, Thames) is as bad as Hitler, then Hitler was only as bad as _____." I--and I suspect some others--am simply not comfortable going that far.

Totally agree.  I have Jewish family members.  I object to "watering down" the horror of Hitler/Nazi Germany in any way by making such comparisons.  I do love the pirate flag idea (but only as an idea -- these people aren't worth going to jail for.)

Instead of a 'nazi' flag, why not just fly the stars and stripes upside down . That is a distress symbol and has been for years. I can't think of a situation more distressing than the one you all are in.

i hope no one is seriously thinking about hoisting a Nazi flag at USM.  Beyond the obvious problems, want it on the front page of the Chronicle?  Want to explain it away?  Are we supporting Nazis?  Why not post a Klan flag as well?  Outside of this state we already look like we are "hooterville."  i hope cooler heads prevail.

Yeah -- ditto with the American flag. In this climate (I mean we are at war) it really probably is not a great idea. It is a tough time to create powerful visual symbols -- things are culturally volatile right now.

I think the ones that seem to work best are those with humor. Everybody has had a good laugh at the Dome Gnome magnets . . . .

Right you all are.  But, a "Hardy High" flag might be good.

I liked the idea from an earlier post of making a visual representation of all the faculty that are leaving. 60 different items (signs? something stuck in the ground--I'm not good at this) would pack a visual punch. In fact, if you had the names from last year too, that would be even better.

How about a group of students each holding a sign saying: In memory of Professor XXXX who left USM because of Shelby Freland Thames"

or take hints from the 'truth' ad spots against smoking, those are some creative ways to show attention.

Yeah, that would be a real good analogy.  Not.

Let's do be careful about comparisons. Remember that the nursing students lost credibility when they compared reorganization to 911. While this situation is a nightmare, no one has died here. Let's respond in ways that maintain our dignity and keeps our credibility. I am all for a little fun at the expense of the dome but you give away your power when you go over the top.

I still like the idea of planting brooms, handle side down, along Hardy Street and in front of the Dome, to signify the desire for a clean sweep.

Students around the Union holding brooms when Anderson arrives?

I also like the idea of students around the Union holding signs with the names of departed/departing faculty.  Excellent idea.
