Don't let the events of today get you down. People are reading the Student Printz more than ever now, especially your editorials and newstories, because they are accurate, on point, thorough and well-reasoned. You are wonderful, and are going to have a bright future in journalism. The SP is already on top of the HA for many people in the Pine Belt these days.
Bringing you into this matter the way Thames did today was despicable. No one bought the argument he was trying to make, and in case you doubt that, don't. Glamser and his attorney are honorable people, and part of what they wanted with the 30 minutes they got at the end was an opportunity to tell all who were listening that you have done nothing wrong. Don't despair, even for a minute.
BTW, I saw your sound byte on the news. Your are quite articulate in the spoken word as well. And, if you think nothing good came out of today's events for you personally, don't be so sure about that. As I watched your interview tonight I said "She's smart..." to which my younger brother (about your age) added "and she's cute too." (He'd never seen you before, though he was already familar with your intellect).
I'm with you, Leslie...Rachael, you bring honor on the office of editor of the Student Printz, much like Robbie Ward and others before you. You and your staff are doing a fabulous job! Too bad Shelby can't be for ALL students (just the ones in the SGA). Hope you get a great career in journalism out of all this!
Rachel (if you're out there), Maybe it attests to your skill as a journalista that you have the Good Ole Boys wanting to take you down before you have even finished college. Keep up the good work, 'cause I'll keep reading it.
For what it's worth, I concur with all the opinions above! Hold your head high, Rachel! By seeking information, you were doing what REAL journalists do; bogus journalists just regurgitate press releases. If you plan to make journalism a career, it will actually be to your professional advantage that you have offended some Powers That Be. That's what good, probing journalists are supposed to do. There are many people in and beyond Hattiesburg who admire the professionalism The Printz has demonstrated in all this.
Rachel and her staff have done a super job all year covering serious issues. The Student Printz has grown into a serious paper over the past three years under Jared Head, Robbie Weeks, and Rachel Quinlivan. They are all heroes.
It's a shame that the student government has not kept pace.
I find it disheartening that Shelby Thames sunk so low that he tried to imply improper activities by a student who was simply complying with what Thames said he wants from all USM students – be the best at what you do. That Thames triedt to poke holes in the character of a student simply because he has personal issues with two professors is intolerable. Thames didn't put the best interests of the university or students first during the hearing when he suggested through no justification that a student would act in a behavior counter to the ethics and values taught by USM's journalism faculty. No matter what issues Thames has with The Student Printz, or any STUDENTS writing for the publication, he should remember that all students must be treated with basic respect and dignity everyone deserves. From personal experience I know that Quinlivan wasn't the first to be subjected to unprofessional conduct by Thames and his crew. Lisa Mader screamed at me to my face and during a phone conversation last year. That type of behavior is unprofessional by anyone in any field, but it's even worse coming from a member of the university's administration to a student. At the end of the day all students, including journalism students, pay tuition, expect a quality education and deserve to be treated with dignity. Thames and his administration haven't lived up to those expectations. I graduated from Southern Miss and want to the best to happen to the university. However, under the current leadership's cut-throat mismanagement, many alumni will be let down by an institution that helped them grow into productive critical thinkers.

OH MY GOD! It's YOU!! I wish I had a copy of that article. That was the most telling thing ever written--a portent of things to come. You did a bang-up job on that issue and the couple of issues that followed. Can't find them in the archive, but please tell me where to get a copy because I would LOVE to feature that in an editorial one day.
Former editor - I remember finding it amusing that Lisa pulled that stunt the week before the last issue of the semester and didn't wait until you all had published the last issue. If she had been thinking . . . well you would never have gotten call. Yet, had she been thinking just a little bit . .. . the call would have been made before you could have had the last eloquent word on the matter!!!
