I was around the LAB this afternoon when all the news came out. I read the news on the Internet and thought it was basically good. But a lot of the faculty I was around hated the agreement. These faculty used to be 100% behind the professors, and now they think that G&S have betrayed them. I don't understand--can someone please explain?
They are so disheartened and beaten up, they wanted a really clear victory. Anybody who has ever been in a lawsuit knew that the "settlement" wouldn't be the perfect solution we hoped for. Settlement basically means everybody gives up something.
Anybody who wants to be mad at G & S, I invite you to engage yourself in a lawsuit. You have no idea of the agony involved. I was in one for five years, as the plaintiff, and by the end it was "get this OVER" -- I don't wish that on anyone. It will eat your life, no matter how "right" you and your cause are, and in the end you WILL settle, and it will make you sick to have to do it.

That is true and the university is going to continue to lose until it is allowed to operate the way that universities are supposed to operate - with shared governance, freedom of speech, and transparency in decision making. I'm sorry that I ridiculed your spelling if you truly want to engage in discussion. Actually, I think there is an unwritten rule that spelling doesn't count on e-mail.

Lanny is right here. The biggest loser in all of this are your students, and their right to a decent quality education.
Yes, Frank and Gary keep their jobs (Hooray). But on the down side of this Shelby is still in office for the time being. And to me, from my own perspective of this, Shelby is the one who probably has lost the most, he is losing his precious control over the university.
This may not be the place for my question, but I'm going to ask it anyway. I read, and I believe on this board, that Lucas fired Shelby when he was a professor there. If this is the case, one: why did the IHL board hire him as president, and two: would not that given Shelby fuel for retaliation toward anyone there? I am speculating here, but were Frank and Gary around when Shelby was fired? If they were, there is all the ammunition Shelby needed to go after them.
Back to topic, I have read the settlement, and while it may not be what many wanted, it is fair. I would like to hear from Frank and Gary to find out what was said in the chambers. They can, if they wish, email me at kittykat1953200@yahoo.com

Shelby was Not fired by Lucas. He "decided" that he wanted to "get back into the Laboratory" because "he loved Polymer Science so much". Or something like that. Of course the faculty knew better, but the board has changed and forgotten.
These professors who are "so mad" and "betrayed" by G&S have NO RIGHT to feel this way! I haven't seen any of them show the courage to publically go after this administration!
Gary said to the faculty senate, "I am not a saint. I do not wish to be a martyr." It is the public who put him in the position he is in! Gary and Frank cannot save the univerisity by themselves. They cannot and do not want to be cult figures. They simply want justice to be done and this univerisity to be saved. G&S did what duty required of them, and now it is the quiet majority who must pick up the torch and finish the work.
Let's see those "betrayed" profs come forward and carry this thing through for the two men who sacrified MORE for USM than anyone else has dared to!!!

This is exacty right, Lanny. It is an embarassment. The good name of the University of Southern Mississippi has been soiled.
And it didn't need to happen.
Thames handled the whole thing incompetently & incorrectly. He revealed himself as little more than a paranoid vindictive micromanager, which greatly denigrates his remarkable career in research. Anderson saved his a$$ by negotiating the settlement & Shelby's lucky the profs' first concern was providing for their families & that the hearing didn't go into cross-examination. (If they really were as hateful as Thames tried to portray them, this case might be headed to federal court soon.)
So I lay 50% of the responsibility for the shame this has brought on the university at the feet of Shelby Thames. (Please picture this as a large concrete block of responsibility dropped from about waist height onto his toes )
I give the other 50% of the credit to the IHL board. They were warned of the kind of "manager" Shelby Thames is & they chose to believe that leopards can change their spots. They hired him in the first place. There's plenty of reason to believe this was done with less than the best interests of the university at heart.
Frank Glamser & Gary Stringer had nothing to do with creating this mess.
I'm afraid it will get uglier before it gets better, but at least the good professors are out of the picture & taken care of.

Yes, he was eager to resume his work as world-class bootyologist.
Thanks for the information. I wasn't clear on that.
I want to retract a statement I made eariler however, when I was so happy that Frank and Gary had gotten their jobs back. I now know that isn't the case. Frank and Gary it seems have gotten the short (no pun intended) end of the stick here. Guys, it pains me to no end to realize just what Shelby and cronies did to you.
To all at the front lines, the fight must, I repeat, must intensify to get rid of Thames and company. For the continued success of USM. What he did to these two men, cannot go on and continue. The issue of invasion of privacy is major now, please do not use your office phones, or office computers, remember any thing you say can be twisted around and used against you.
I did not like what I saw in Thames when I looked at him, now that I know more about him, he is pure evil. I fear for the future of USM as many of you do. Use extreme caution for I am certian he (Thames) will be looking for any excuse what so ever to do more and more damage.
My prayers remain with USM and her students. For in all actuality that is what we are fighting for.
