Disbanding Senate suggested in meeting

Top administrators at the University of Southern Mississippi don't plan to do away with the Faculty Senate and haven't seriously talked about it, several of them said this week.

But the idea did come up at a meeting of President Shelby Thames' cabinet, said Elliott Pood, dean of the College of Arts and Letters.

"As I recall somebody had some frustration and said 'Let's disband it,'" he said. "It's not something that was ever considered. It was not a serious discussion."

Serious or not, talk about the discussion made its way to both the USM chapter of the American Association of University Professors and the Faculty Senate, the university-sanctioned faculty organization.

"We have two confirmations that it happened," said history professor Bill Scarborough, a member of both groups. "Whether it goes any further, we'll have to see. I would think it would be very stupid."

The Faculty Senate took a 40-0 no confidence vote after Thames suspended tenured sociology professor Frank Glamser and English professor Gary Stringer on March 5 and started termination proceedings against them. The senate held a campus-wide faculty convocation on March 10 at which faculty voted 430-32 against confidence in Thames' leadership.

What did they promise you, Elliott Pood?  Tenure?  Provost?  What a disappointment you turned out to be!  And, Willie Pierce, how did you become dean over the opposition of Dana Thames - make a deal with the devil?  Jay Grimes, you have some integrity - where are your cojones?  Friends of the website, Janet Braswell is trying...let's give her some credit here.

Yes, kudos to Janet for reporting this.  Also, they are reporting that Angie's not worth tenuring...the tide seems to be turned at the ole HA (get it??  HAHA).

I'd just like to make a comment here regarding Janet B. at the HM. Someone (I don't remember who it was) posted awhile back the Janet B. was on Shelby's personal payroll. I think that it might be a good idea in the future to attack someone's actual deeds rather lashing out with ad hominum attacks just because someone makes a mistake or says something that some of us might not agree with. Criticize, discuss, joke, whatever. I just remember thinking that the aforementioned comment was mean and spiteful, like Thames's accusations that the faculty members were bribing the students to react to the firings of G&S.
