Bok’s lessons < In Derek Bok's book, he talks alot about what students learn while they're at college. As he says numerous times, they often learn as many lessons from observing the way the university's administration behaves as they do from their textbooks. How can a university ask a student not to sell their class notes and old exams and papers to other students, when the university sets up a slipshod Phd program on the Internet and peddles it nationwide? How can the athletic department ask its athletes not to accept in-kind gifts and cash from boosters when the university sells its soul to the GodwinGroup and Pileum Corporation, and the never-ending quest for big-dollar contracts and grants for work of trivial academic importance (beige paint). gross insubordination < 1. flagrant disregard for authority (in normal use); 2. to Jack Hanbury, abiding by federal laws (e.g., the Freedom of Information Act) and/or failing to submit to Thames authority.
nebulous and misguided personal/outside counsel < Jack Hanbury’s characterization of private lawyers hired by two USM Deans who advised these Deans to follow through on a Freedom of Information Act request by USM’s Faculty Senate regarding the 2004 mid-year raises (calling all local attorneys, is Jack Hanbury calling you (personally) a jackass? If he is, you should be "mad as hell," to borrow Bobby Chain’s phrase about e-mail surveillance).
outdoor celling < 1. new and increasingly popular sport at USM, played by faculty, staff, and many administrators (e.g., department chairs, deans, etc.), wherein you go outside the building housing your office (place of work) to use your cell phone in order to avoid the prying ears of Jack Hanbury and Shelby Thames waiting for you on the university phone system. Outdoor activity not only offers privacy, but better reception and some wonderful weather (as you pace around, having your conversation); 2. CBED Dean Harold Doty is said to be a proficient player (or outdoor celler), probably from the many conversations with his nebulous and misguided personal/outside counsel.
