This blurb appeared this morning in the Mississippi Business Journal. Note the part about working closely with the faculty.
MSU names Scanes new research VP Tuesday, 4 May 2004, 6:30 a.m.
STARKVILLE — Mississippi State University (MSU) has named Colin Guy Scanes as vice president for research and graduate studies. Scanes, whose research has been published in more than 500 scholarly papers and other publications, is expected to join MSU by June 1, subject to approval of the state College Board.
Scanes has been a professor of animal science since 1995 at Iowa State University, where he also has served as interim director of the Center for Designing Food for Human Nutrition, interim director of the Plant Sciences Institute and executive associate director of the Iowa Agricultural and Home Economics Experiment Station. He previously was distinguished professor and chair of the animal sciences department and director of the Center for Animal Damage Control at Rutgers University.
Scanes, a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, holds advanced degrees from the University of Wales and Hull University in the United Kingdom, where he began his academic career.
He has been honored for his work with Iowa corn and soybean growers, is a fellow of the Poultry Science Association and serves on the editorial boards of scholarly journals in animal biotechnology and poultry biology. Scanes also served on the Biotechnology Committee of the National Association of State Universities and Land-Grant Colleges and on the Governor's Life Sciences Advisory Committee in Iowa, along with industry consulting and other government service.
At MSU, the vice president for research works closely with faculty members in the university's eight colleges and schools, and then numerous research centers and institutes. Additionally, the Office of Research oversees intellectual property and technology licensing functions. In addition to research-related duties, Scanes will assume responsibility for graduate studies at MSU.
What you should really do is compare him to Dvorak. Hundreds of publications, was a professor at Iowa State University, etc. What was she? At several junior colleges and she published a total of 20-something pages of work (see Wallace Report in the Glossary by webster).
Has the article on Dvorak been in MBJ yet? Also, on April 9, a teaser for the week of the 12th said that Thames was to be interviewed. Have you seen either of these?
How come State can get a guy with 500 scholarly publications & a terrific looking research/administrative track record? I thought the market was so slim that all a Mississippi school could hope for was some spent political hack & that there was no need for a national search.
"Animal science" may not sound like high tech (it probably is nowadays), but it is 100% aligned with the MSU mission.

Since when, and where, does the Director of Human Resources need to be a practicing attorney? Give me a break! My sources tell me that Russ Willis had to come back to keep the thing even functional (also see Glossary) -- what experience in HR did Mr. Dvorak have?
Bogusboy found it! After reading the interview, I am wondering how much external funding has been submitted since March 5. I suspect the campus turmoil has taken a toll. Will also be interesting to look at Dvorak's claim to research $$ for this year. She, of course, took credit for the ones generated by Don Cotten.

This has to be one of the most obvious puff-pieces I have ever read. It doesn't even make a pretense of objectivity. The comment by the INTERVIEWER extolling the credentials of AD's husband is priceless. Once again, the Gang That Can't Shoot Straight win the prize for lack of subtlety.
So after reading this propaganda, I tried to look up the writer, Lynne Jeter.
Her email address is mbj@thewritingdesk.com. Odd that she wouldn't have her initials be her address, so I tried to visit thewritingdesk.com. It is "under construction". However, Jeter owns the website:
Administrative Contact: Jeter, Pepper lwjeter@yahoo.com thewritingdesk 300 Long Shoals Rd. 4-B Arden, North Carolina 28704 United States 8286871529 Fax -- 8286872873 Technical Contact: Jeter, Pepper lwjeter@yahoo.com thewritingdesk 300 Long Shoals Rd. 4-B Arden, North Carolina 28704 United States 8286871529 Fax -- 8286872873
Now, she evidently does do a lot of writing. She has a book entitled: "Disconnected: Deceit and Betrayal at WorldCom". Here is a scathing review (well, about as scathing as the Clarion-Ledger gets): http://orig.clarionledger.com/news/0303/08/b04.html
Here's her bio from the back flap of this book: "Lynne W. jeter has been the primary WorldCom reporter for the only statewide business journal in Mississippi (home of WorldCom HQ), the Mississippi Business Journal. Jeter has closely followed the company's rise and fall since its inception as LDDS in 1983. As a native Mississippian, Jeter has a solid knowledge of the unique business climate of the Deep South and access to a wealth of information and contacts that no other reporter could possess on this topic. She is also a recular contributing reporter for the Clarion-Ledger, Mississippi's largest daily newspaper. Jeter was named SBA Small Business Journalist of the Year for Mississippi in 1999.
"...that no other reporter could possess"? crank up the propaganda machine...
Finally, I checked for other "hard hitting" Lynne interviews. Here's one with Thad Cochran: http://www.pointeinnovation.ms/thad.html
Sigh...no wonder Angie Baby agreed to the "interview".
