"The state Senate on Tuesday approved a bill that would allow a referendum of Hattiesburg voters on a 1 cent sales tax increase that would help finance projects at the University of Southern Mississippi."

"The bill now faces House scrutiny."

"If the House approves the bill without changes, it would go to Gov. Haley Barbour for final approval. A Barbour spokesman said the governor is expected to sign the measure."
