I got a call early this morning on my cellular phone. Mayor Dupree wanted to push our breakfast up in his calendar, and he changed the location to the train depot downtown. He was arranging a catered breakfast for my arrival.
I got ready about as fast I ever have, and my risk manager and I were out the door fast. We swung by Lisa's place and picked up my RM's associate, and I had the two of them delivered to campus early this morning. They wanted to get some early morning photos of any chalking that may have been done overnight on campus. By now they are moving around campus, talking to students and doing some faculty interviews. I hope all you profs will welcome them into your offices if they drop by. MY RM has intelligence training and will want to look at your phone jacks if you don't mind.
Let me tell you all about breakfast. Mayor Dupree had a beautiful spread waiting on me. He and Ms. Dennard listened to my explanation of my visit to Hattiesburg, and I presented him with a check for $17 million. I then asked for his support in cutting Thames loose on the tax plan to raise funds for capital projects at USM. Clutching the check in his hand, he said "I can't, unless you do one additional thing for me" (Ms. Dennard didn't speak the whole time). We went out behind the depot and he pointed to a flatbed car hooked to an engine. On top were two trolleys he said he wanted me to take back to Michigan. I agreed, and sent instructions to the engineer to go ahead.
Mayor Dupree then agreed to fade away into the political forest on the Thames deal. He's an impressive guy, tough negotiator. I told him he might hear from the TCLS HR Director about a high-level position in the next few days.
Well, with that done, I'm typing from my car now. My driver and I are headed to Poplarville (i.e., PRCC) for a brief meeting with Ms. Askew. This could be a pivotal part of my trip here if all goes well.
I'm going to hustle back for lunch with Mr. Chain and Carl Nicholson at 206 Front Street. I'm bringing a surprise for Mr. Nicholson as well --- Robbie Ward is tagging along. This was suggested to me by Bobby, who said he wanted to allow Mr. Ward to "confront" Nicholson about "a few things." Sounds exciting, can't wait.
Hope you're all having a good day. I know I am, so far so good. Will report back later today when I have a minute.

My my, Mr Cooley. You are an early morning kind of guy. You get real busy down there in Poplarville . . .
While you are in Poplarville, please see if you can find anything out about the white loveseats that were in the Director of Recruitment's office circa 1986. I am starting a USM Crisis Furniture Collection and would like to add to it.
