The email monitoring issue is tailor-made for the ACLU.

Let's hope the FIRE joins them (Harvey Silverglate of the FIRE has longstanding ties to the ACLU) and makes a nationally publicized case out of it.

Don't get discouraged..

Garret and Newton just couldn't pull it off at this time. Coulbert wouldn't call the meeting and G&S needed five votes to call one anyhow. They might even have gotten them BUT:

Nicholson, Klumb and Ross would not come -- that leaves eight. Of that group, ay least one had another appointment he/she couldn't break. That leaves seven.

There will be several in the middle who would be uncomfortable voting on such a thing with a bare quorum.

Look for some major activity when the Board meets next to rotate the new members. The new members are studying this .... they know it may be the first major issue they will have to face.

The Board sends one or two reps to graduation. I bet no one wants to face that embarrassment. If DShelby manages to survive this next meeting -- I don't believe he will survive the next.

In the next several days a number of resolutions will be put out that will call for action. It will be difficult to ignore them . . .

It is probable there was a significant amount of arm twisting and aligning going on today.

We shouldn't quit calling or emailing, though. We should give no appearance that our anger has subsided, regardless of what the board members' obligations or sentiments are.

A letter from Shelby, a President's Cherry-picked Council, and the firing of the Hack does not a happy university make.

These new board appointees (with the exception of Robin Robinson, who I believe is very much pro-Thames) will not have the same "ego issue" as the ones rotating off the board. I believe it would be very difficult for the current board to make the public admission that it made a horrible mistake appointing Thames. The new members, however, may provide the swing votes that Newton and Garrett need to remove him from office.

Unfortunately, thanks Governor one term Barbour, the worst one for USM's best interest is the one with the USM degree. I know her. Bad news.

I see a draw for quick removal of SFT.

I see it more than a year at best. Robin will not agree with Virginia on anything, and the Robin I know will consider her a weak, non-entrepreneurial wimp.

I'm bumping the thread with Jim Hollandsworth's "USM should be run like a business" post. I hope Jim or someone sends it to the four new board members because it hits the nail on the head.
