One theme sounded in D. C. Berry's speech today was the responsibility of the college board for the mess USM is now in. And he was right. The college board has sat on its hands and allowed the situation to deteriorate beyond the point of healing and still gives no indication that it plans to address the issue. But another important figure in this tragic fiasco, who may be in large part responsible for the board's lack of action, has been David Potter. I'm reliably told that Potter possesses lots of accurate information about what's wrong at Southern, yet day after day, week after week, month after month does nothing. The state pays this guy $250,000 per year--a cool quarter mil--and could get exactly the same amount of leadership out of a $12.95 blow-up beach toy. What's wrong with him?
Mr. Potter does not have any ties to Southern Miss. He is probably more concerned with the university he represents.
The Board needs to remove its hands from its eyes and ears. It's bad enough when events happen that affect faculty and staff. But when they start to affect the students, there is no excuse or reason for it. I know many graduates from Southern Miss who are ashamed to admit where they attend college or which university they received their degree from.
Mississippi is always at the bottom of some national list. I guess you can add it to another one!

Potter doesn't see much of the news, either. He is building a house in the SW US, and spends most of his time there, now.
Dr. David Potter has a wife with terminal cancer - he is spending much of his time in the Southwest to be with her. I'm sure readers didn't know this - let's be sensitive.

I thought I saw a story a couple of weeks ago that she died.

My heart goes out to his wife and him, but why doesn't he resign if he is needed in another part of the country? This has nothing to do with humanity and everything to do with "a day's work for a day's pay."

Members of this board can criticize Potters' performance as IHL commissioner while feeling sympathy for his personal situation. Our hearts go out to him as he deals with his family crisis.
i'm stunned by the coldness of your response. i'm not sure you've gone through potter's situation. it is one of life and death. sorry, in my mind, that trumps a lot of other issues. he doesn't run the board, he is hired by them. he is not the problem. there is a staff that works in his absence. let's keep our humanity.

I'm stunned by the fact that you can't SEE our humanity...FS and I BOTH said that we felt for Potter and his wife (please don't make assumptions about what people have been through, either, as you have no way of knowing). These are 2 separate issues, as FS said: we are saying that we understand and are sorry for David Potter's personal situation. Yet, he is still employed as the IHL Commissioner and there is a crisis at USM. We need everyone's voices and expertise to help deal with this crisis, and it is a shame that his voice is not among those that we have heard. THAT is all I was pointing out.
i called you out on the coldness of your response. if you don't like it, tough. my family is going through this and i am speaking from personal experience. i feel for the man and his family. i feel for what is going on here as well.

It sounds like your personal experience is coloring your reading of my response. I feel no compunction to explain myself further on this issue.
(on a separate issue...)
But, since you did disclose your family's personal trials...I offer my condolences and heartfelt wishes that your situation gets better soon. May you find peace in every day.
the point about my personal experience is that there are many people on this campus who have health problems or family health problems. your position seems to be--quit if you have them! potter shouldn't quit. that's a quick, short-sighted, and cold response. i will continue to say--keep our humanity and empathy.

No, my position is: be responsible. If you aren't able to deal with your job responsibilities for whatever reason (and if you don't feel the need to quit), please delegate these responsibilities to other qualified people. Also, his is a high-level, high-visibility job...makes it even more important to hear from him during this crisis.

be responsible! and he's not been responsible? to whom should Potter delegate his responsibilities? the board is his boss. should he delegate responsibilities to them? there is a staff. why delegate his responsibilities (on this issue) to them rather than the board itself? sorry, i think most people can understand why he hasn't been as "responsible" as you would like. again, let's be humane and empathetic.

lddad--
I have refrained from jumping into the fray on this thread...just let me say that I understand that cancer is a terrible disease. Having just been through a terrible illness with a dear family member, I have much compassion for Dr. Potter's situation.
I do not believe he has abdicated his responsibilities as IHL commissioner--he's in a tough position right now, and I think that we all understand that and offer him our sympathies.
Even the most vocal Thames critics I know have expressed compassion for Potter's situation. Please don't paint with a broad brush that we are unsympathetic. We are not.

Whatever...I stand my ground on this one. You guys have no idea what I've been through in my life, and I don't feel the need to spill my guts on this board.
The point that I was trying to make that got lost in all of this is: IF David Potter really is spending all his time somewhere in the Southwest US, then it is sad for MS higher education that his voice is not heard during this crisis. I said NOTHING about his personal troubles (other than to send his family my heartfelt good wishes), and made one off-the-cuff remark about wishing he would quit if he couldn't uphold his job duties.
