a day’s work for a day’s pay < 1. specious argument made to criticize USM faculty by pro-Thames members of the business community, suggesting that college professors work about 2 to 3 hours a week; 2. this argument is often made by pro-Thames business people likely at the insistence/urging of Shelby Thames himself (see also Shelby’s the boss and those liberal college profs); 3. now, all anti-Thames people can think about when they hear this line is Frank Glamser and Gary Stringer kicking back on a gorgeous white sand beach with a cold one.

Shelby’s the boss < 1. argument made by pro-Thames individuals that rests on the belief that "the boss may not always be right, but he’s always the boss" (quote from L. Paul Bradford, Sr. on 5/9/04); 2. good example of this argument comes from L. Paul Bradford’s letter to The Sun-Herald (see Shelby’s classmates) stating "Dr. Shelby Thames is to be commended for his recent disciplinary actions of professors, and for the outstanding job he is doing running Southern Mississippi .... [message to USM professors]: ‘Dr. Thames is the boss. Quiet down and do as instructed’" (see also a day’s work for a day’s pay and those liberal college profs)

Shelby’s classmates < all the graduates of the "USM Class of 195_-1960" (i.e., old classmates of Thames) who write, likely at the insistence/urging of Shelby Thames himself, inflammatory letters to newspaper editors espousing the a day’s work for a day’s pay argument, the Shelby’s the boss argument, or the those liberal college profs argument (or all 3). Examples include L. Paul Bradford, Sr., Billy Hewes, and Conrad Kleinpeter [guest Glossary entry by googler]

those liberal college profs < 1. an argument made pro-Thames citizens, that USM’s professors and students are liberal commie pinkos out to attack the conservative values of Shelby Thames and the external constituents (i.e., Mississippi taxpayers) he represents; 2. good example of the argument is given by A.E. Griffing of Jackson (see letters to editor of The Clarion-Ledger on 5/9/2004) when he says "Sociology professor Frank Glamser and English professor Gary Stringer and other professors teaching courses not requiring irrefutable formulas, such as two plus two equals four, have latitude for twisting the courses to fit their own [liberal political] agendas.. . President Shelby Thames, conditioned to logic in science, should be encouraged in his stand for the betterment of USM."; 3. this argument is often made by pro-Thames business people very likely at the insistence/urging of Shelby Thames himself (see also a day’s work for a day’s pay and Shelby’s the boss).

Yeah, I'd like a raise, too!  But staff, especially are in tough times economically.
