When the so called presidential search started, I was told by a retired prof in the sciences, who seemed to know just about everything, that the whole thing was a battle between USM and MSU to control the coast. The Coast is where the money is. The prez at State at that time reportedly spent every waking minute trying to figure out how to do USM in. The ultimate goal was for USM to be MSU-South Campus. Of course I did not know or understand enough to have an opinion on these observations at the time, but they keep coming to mind.
