So far I have received three responses to my email to all representatives and senators. I got an acknowledgement from Rob Paterson, a somewhat positive note from J. Fillingame, and just now a very lengthy and promising response from Senator Deborah Dawkins, from District 48, West Harrison County. She indicated that she would urge the chair of the Senate Committee on Universities and Colleges to take some action if nothing positive transpires at the next board meeting. It might be a good idea to write to the chair of that committee directly. I will have to look up who that is and post later.
I too got a response to my letter from Deborah Dawkins, although she is the only one who's replied so far. She wrote once and then again, after reading my letter to the editor in the Sun Herald. She indicated in both messages that the board is autonomous--that is, that to some extent the legislature's hands are tied--but she also said that she was going to ask some questions of the AG's office and elsewhere about things like e-mail monitoring, etc. Most importantly, she encouraged me (and others) to keep writing letters and to come out publicly, as publicly as we can, with our distress and dismay about the pass to which we have come.
SO--keep those letters going. I think they WILL make a difference. On another note: continue wearing those buttons and badges around town. Whenever I have mine on, I get questions--and people get answers (longer ones, surely, than they had anticipated!).
Thanks very much to BOTH of you for writing, and to Senator Dawkins for replying! I will see if I can find out the members of the committee she mentions and report back with their e-mail addresses so we can focus on them directly.
Seems to me we need to be writing the govenor as he is the one who appoints the board members and may have the ability to influence it more than the legislature does.
I agree, although pressure of all kinds on all sorts of "influential people" can help. I have posted the governor's email address on another thread and will keep bumping it to the top in the hope that others will follow your advice.
