University needs leader like Thames

LETTERS

The faculty at USM are putting their own comfort, likes and dislikes before those of the students. They have been employed for so long now that they have completely forgotten about their students. They are well-paid, teach few classes, face no pressure to do research and keep practically no office hours. No one stands over them day after day. They are their own boss.

Many of them complained about the last president and how he could not get their salaries increased, which is probably why his contract was not renewed.

Now they are complaining about the current president, and he probably won't have his contract renewed. What is worse, some faculty have offered their students extra credit to appear at a Thames' impeachment rally, which is academically unethical.

Faculty who put their own personal interests above those of the students should not be making important decisions about the university.

This is why someone like President Thames is needed at USM.

John Smith, Hattiesburg

I guess this is why so many are leaving.  They're just bored?  It's all too easy at USM?

This makes me so mad I can't see straight.  "Teach a few classes?"  Just waltz in and spout a bunch of stuff off the top of your head?  Make up exams on the spot?  Sheesh.

Pretty much what this guy does in his letter -- spout off without checking his facts.

These type of letters are very telling. They lack facts, they want to discuss those stereotypical generalities about college teaching, and they are poorly communicated.  I don't think that even the Hootersville community could look more inept.

Didn't Dr. Thames, in his "can't we all get along " letter mention, to paraphrase, that he brags on his faculty and staff every chance he gets? He brags about lazy slackers and hangers oners?? The argument that the faculty needs "cleaning out" falls by Thames' own words.
