I've been posting items of interest near the mailboxes in my department every so often: the Chronicle article, items in the local papers, an occasional bit from fireshelby. Last week I posted Hollandsworth's essays on running the university like a business and his rebuttal to Thames's letter. Several people requested copies. Today I found the essays torn down and in the trash. Lest you think it was a routine cleaning of the space, an unrelated newspaper article was left hanging and the picture of Frank and Gary drinking on the beach which someone else had put up was also gone.
I simply no longer feel like I work at an institution of higher learning. I feel like I work in a fascist state. The message is really clear--it is not okay to express any kind of opinion.
I am honored that you would take the time to copy and post something I wrote in a public area near your office. However, I must admit that I am more honored by those cretins who tore down what you posted and replaced it with an intended slam against two good men.
They just don’t get it, do they?
NO QUARTER! (and that includes the notion that Tim Hudson is going to be our next president)
Thanks for your truly excellent words, Jim. A couple of us mentioned in another thread (now far down in the pile) that we'd like to see you print your rebuttal to Thames's "letter" in the American . . . Rich Campbell might be willing to give you a "guest column"--worth asking, anyway. We'd all love to see this material in an even more "public" venue.

One of the best decsion Thames made was to make you Dean of the Gradaute School. For a brief time, I believe Shelby would do the right thing. We appreciate what you have done for USM.
On Liberty and Power, we have occasional "guest bloggers," who each contribute for a week.
David Beito is the coordinator at L and P. Since he asked me to become a blogger at L and P because I wanted to write about academia, and he's encouraged me to cover the USM crisis, I don't think it will be too hard to talk him into inviting you on as a guest blogger.
