I have not read Exit 13, but I have been reminded by recent events of a little-known sci-fi novel by C. S. Lewis (it seems to be my night to mention him) called That Hideous Strength, the last volume in his "space trilogy" that also includes Out of the Silent Planet and Perelandra.  Though the first two books take place partly on other planets, the action in the third is securely on earth, and in fact follows the fortunes of a small university in the process of selling out to a large and dubious scientific corporation.  Lewis advises in the preface that he has only selected his own profession--academia--because it is "the only profession I know well enough to write about," but the descriptions of academic politics are eerily well drawn.  And, I might add, the two protagonists are a sociology professor and someone working on her Ph.D. thesis on the poetry of John Donne.

I doubt the book has ever been out of print.  I just checked amazon.com and find that one can purchase it new for just $6.95 (mass market paperback), and there are used copies available for as little as 39 cents.  It might be just the thing for the week after finals.  Has anyone else ever read it?

Oh Dr. Lares, you are on my turf!  Thank you for invoking CSL.  cf. my post on your other thread.  My interest in the trilogy was the development of Ransom as the "magnanimous" hero, a description that changes from book to book in ways that parallel the changes in the very meaning of magnanimity - - -here I go again, sorry.  But one of the themes in That Hideous Strength is the need of belonging to an Inner Circle.  I think we are seeing the dangers of that tendency right here at USM.  Thank you for seeing the relevance of this wonderful book to our situation.
