How Walt responds to the large increase in student activity fees now given over by the Thames Admin. to the SGA will be a test of his character. Fact is, there is a real divide in the experience of students at USM; those who stay here on the weekends and those who go home each weekend (or every day just as soon as they can). If Walt spends that money with an eye always on encouraging a sense of community, and reasons to stay here (gasp!) all week, that could cut the unfortunate tendency toward being a dreaded "suitcase school." By the way, almost by definition, no Suitcase School is or can be "worl'-class."
If, however, Walt gets seduced (or traduced) and shows himself just willing to stand there and smile and do someone's bidding, and clearly he is either naive or knowing; well....as they say it is better to regret what one does than what one does not do (unless you want a political career that is). Certainly a Varsity News official SGA newspaper is the most stupid idea lately. Great universities often have more than 1 campus newspaper; no great university would have students even entertain the idea that one of those would be officially sponsored by the SGA, especially in this environment. Hopefully the CSUSM are paying attention, as frankly my dear, I don't give a d-mn.
There is a constant in all of this that should be carved in stone. The SGA ALWAYS supports the administration, either wholeheartedly outright, or by staying "neutral" when the president's a** is hanging out in the wind.
It makes sense for them. The admin. gives them perks, makes them feel important, and blows a little wind into their political sails (no pun intended).
Only a very headstrong individual would do otherwise, and they usually are not attracted to SGA, whose members are there just to pump up their resume.
For young people like Cain, Loftus and others to be rewarded for such behavior helps us understand where the Jim Bakers, Gary Harts and other beat the system people get their start in life. Thames can shape more young minds with quick money than professors can in four years. It is no wonder why higher education is so difficult when professors are teaching students not to do the very thing the (p)resident is demonstrating that works.

Looks like Cain just took a stand! He is pro-Thames. Students, check your e-mail. He just sent one out.
