Could SFT be "promoted" out of the presidency?
Permalink Closed

Robert Campbell and others have made the point that SFT is so hugely egotistical that he cannot imagine himself NOT being president of USM.  Is there any chance, then, that he could be given a "promotion" -- being made, for instance, something like Special Counsel to the Governor for Economic Development for Southern Mississippi? In other words, give him a fancy title that seems even more important than the presidency of USM and that will allow him to get all kinds of publicity for helping to bring business to the southern half of the state.  This might mollify him, make his supporters happy, reward him for his actual service to USM in past decades, and, most importantly, get him out of the president's office.  Would he accept a solution like this?  Would the faculty and staff find such a solution acceptable?

The only problem I can see with that (at first glance) is that if SFT is no longer associated with a university, then he will be ineligible for most federal grant money (at least, as a PI--principle investigator).  I can't imagine him giving up that lucrative pipeline of $$ or losing his Thames Research Group in the PSRC.  I'm sure he'd negotiate to keep his faculty status at USM somehow.

Perhaps you're onto something here!

Maybe he could simultaneously hold his old position in Polymer Science AND his new position as Special Counsel to the Governor.  Heck, I would even be willing to see him given the title King of the Universe (as long as it came with no real power).  On a serious note, he could probably do some real good as an Economic Development Coordinator for South Mississppi; this (not education) seems to be his first love anyway.

Here's a message I just sent to Governor Barbour:

Governor Barbour can be a hero to everyone if he (a) returns President Shelby Thames to the Polymer Science program and (b) appoints Shelby Thames as Special Assistant to the Governor for Economic Development of South Mississippi.  This can then be seen as a promotion by SFT and his supporters; it will allow SFT to contribute to Mississippi in ways to which he seems best suited; and it will prevent SFT from further damaging morale at USM and from further damaging USM's reputation in the state, region, and nation.  It will be a "promotion" for SFT that will remove him from his failed presidency and allow him to do some real good for the state.

Here's the link to the governor's on-line request form:

I totally agree with you Sympathizeer. It would be a good spot for him to receive more favorable press than he has of late.  It's clear he has no love of education anymore (if he ever did).

This might just be a face-saving way of easing Thames out.

It's worth a try!
