From the local Ear, Nose and Throat Doc Chuck Guice:

USM faculty should be fired

LETTERS

The faculty of USM should stop acting like spoiled children and start acting like adults.

Fact: Dr. Thames has an established record of running a department that is recognized nationally for its academic and economic accomplishments that reflect favorably on the school.

Fact: The shakeup of the dean lineup reportedly saved the university several million dollars.

Fact: The College Board and the president of the university have administrative responsibility for the running the university, not the faculty.

Fact: The faculty was hired to teach, not administrate. From the outset, the faculty has been against Dr. Thames because of personal dislike, and a cadre of professors have fomented trouble among the rest of the faculty and the students.

If it were possible, the faculty should be fired.

Additionally, those who withhold money from the university because of any of the above just hurt the school they pretend to love.

C.E. Guice, Hattiesburg

Fact:  I will not be going to Dr. Guise for any ear, nose, or throat problems!

This letter helpfully exposes the irrationality of many SFT supporters.  The WHOLE DANG FACULTY should be fired?  These people simply cannot admit what is painfully obvious to most objective observers: SFT is an incompetent administrator.  Anyone who managed (no pun intended) to engender the kind of paralysis and widespread destruction of morale he has provoked among his workforce would have been fired long ago in a normal business.

Can someone please explain to me the psychology behind a letter like this one?  It seems to be "Thames-or-nothing"; why the fanatical, unreasoning loyalty to one man?

Sounds more like a slam at Dr. Hartwig and maybe others we don't know about, than anything else.

I would love to see Dr. Guice's reacation if somebody tried to run the hospital the way SFT runs USM -- tell those doctors to shut up and play ball -- ain't gonna happen!

This is an EXCELLENT analogy; do you mind if I steal it and use it in my letters?

She curteys.  Thank you.  Yes you may.  I have been frustrated all along by the underlying assumption of pro SFT ers that USM is essentially a big open factory.  The point that is not getting out is that SFT is NOT the boss!! He is supposed to be the LEADER.  There is a huge difference and the hospital analogy is the closest we can find, that people will understand.  Can you see Bill Oliver telling MD's they have to account for their time in fifteen-minute increments, the way SFT used to do profs on the Coast?

Of course the analogy is imperfect, in that docs are not really employees of the hospital, but if they were, woe betide the administrator who tried to micromanage like Thames does.  Talk about herding cats!  I've worked with MDs a good bit (LSU School of Medicine for one place) and I can tell you, they are hard to manage.  They are trained relentlessly to accept final responsibility, to have the last word because they have to, to be the one where the buck stops, and people with that mindset do not "obey" very well.  I think that applies to faculty to a certain extent as well.

he didn't even attend Southern Miss?  What right does he have to stick his ear, nose, or throat in our university?

To "USM Student":

One cannot ascertain from this profile whether or not he attended USM. It only tells you where he attended med school, and did his ENT residency. USM has no med school or teaching hospital. However, as a Hattiesburg native, it's not inconceivable that he may have done his undergrad, pre-med work at USM.

I know nothing about this guy, but if he authored the letter in question (rather than his father or grandfather), his ignorance notwithwstanding, I'd say it was extremely foolish of him, from a PR/practice building standpoint, to pontificate in this manner. However, as a "member" of the medical profession, I don't find his comments surprising given that he's a surgeon, a species known for megalomania.

I just put in a call to the doctor's office to determine whether he is indeed the author of the letter.  If he is not, he should not be blamed; if he is, I would drop him if I were a patient there.  He is treating a patient right now; his receptionist promised to get back in touch with me ASAP.  I will let you know what (and when) I hear.

I just received a phone call back from Dr. Guice's office stating emphatically that he is NOT the author of the notorious letter; he only writes medical articles.

This is not a question that I believe will rank (as everything about the upper echelon is rank) libel or slander suits for the respondents, but what might be a short list of "not-to's" that I should avoid in Hattiesburg? I'm a newbie to USM but not a Thamatron, so I don't want to eat at a tyrant's buffet and sip from the cup of his vile imaginations. I'm not against people with diverse opinions or to those for which I do not agree, but I certainly don't want to aid the enemy in a time of peace. I appreciate your comments.

Wish we could get her to do some cleaning over in the Dome!

Perhaps, in addition to T-shirts, we should produce signs saying "We support the USM Faculty" and ask store owners to put them in their windows in Hattiesburg and on the Coast.  Then we would know where to shop.
