CoEP - pattern doesn't change

This a press release from last year. It's interesting to note that one of the co-chairs of the Search Committee, in the same Shelboo manner, became the Dean of College of CoEP.  When is there ever going to be a true outside search????

Released February 7, 2003

DEAN'S SEARCH COMMITTEE FINALIZED
FOR COLLEGE OF EDUCATION AND PSYCHOLOGY

HATTIESBURG - A diverse cross section of faculty, staff, students and community members has been tapped by The University of Southern Mississippi to select a dean for the College of Education and Psychology.

The College of Education and Psychology is one of the new colleges created by the recent academic restructuring at Southern Miss, which will streamline nine existing degree-granting colleges into five. The realignment will begin next fiscal year, July 1, 2003.

"The search committee for the dean of the College of Education and Psychology is loaded with talented, accomplished and dedicated faculty, staff, students and stakeholders," said Dr. Tim Hudson, Gulf Coast provost. "We appreciate their willingness to commit time and effort to this important process."

Hudson said that once the committees have reviewed applications, a small number of candidates will be invited to Southern Miss in the late spring for interviews and to meet with all interested faculty, staff, students and supporters. The search committee, one of five overall, was formed with volunteers and through nominations by staff and faculty, including chairs and directors.

"We are excited about the strength and perspective that all members bring to their committee," said Dr. Jay Grimes, Hattiesburg provost.

Dr. Willie Pierce and Dr. Ann Blackwell will serve as co-chairs for the committee. Pierce, director of the Center for Adult Learning and Education, said he is confident that a highly qualified group of candidates will emerge from the search.

"I am looking forward to a search that assures input representing all of the academic and service areas of the reorganized college and that results in the selection of the very best fit possible," he said.

The new College of Education and Psychology will consist of educational leadership and research, curriculum, instruction and special education, technology education and psychology, all currently in the College of Education and Psychology; library and information sciences, currently in the College of Liberal Arts; family and consumer sciences education, child and family studies, family and consumer studies, early intervention, and marriage and family therapy, all currently in the College of Health and Human Sciences.

"The search committee offers an opportunity for colleagues from many different disciplines to work together and identify the best possible candidate for the dean's position," said Blackwell, assistant professor in the College of Health and Human Sciences.

The search committee represents a wide range of strengths, interests and backgrounds. Members include:

– Wanda Maulding, assistant professor in the Department of Educational Administration. Maulding is the new chair of the Division of Education and Psychology on the Gulf Coast campus.

– Stan Kucjaz, professor and chair of the Department of Psychology since 1996. His research interests have broadened to include dolphin cognition and communication, and the results of his work have been featured on the BBS, the Discovery Channel and Animal Planet.

– Jesse Palmer, professor of curriculum instruction and special education. Palmer, who has served 17 years at Southern Miss, is a past president of the Faculty Senate.

– Ann Blackwell, assistant professor in the College of Health and Human Sciences. Blackwell is the recipient of the university's Excellence in Teaching Award and has co-authored a manual on college teaching.

– Joy M. Greiner, associate professor in the School of Library and Information Science. The director of the school from 1991-99, Greiner has secured more than $100,000 in grants for student internships/assistantships from the Gates Foundation and Forrest County Law Library.

– Mitch Berman, associate professor of psychology and the director of Clinical Training for Southern Miss's clinical psychology doctoral program. Before joining the faculty at Southern Miss in 1996, Berman was an assistant professor of psychiatry at the Medical College of Pennsylvania and Hahnemann University Medical School.

Yuen was a senior Fulbright Scholar to Taiwan in 1992-93 and was named the "2002 Mississippi Technology Educator of the Year" by the Mississippi Educational Computing Association.

– W. Lee Pierce, coordinator of Graduate Programs in Adult Education and the director of the newly created Center for Adult Learning and Education. Pierce has been associated with the graduate program in adult education at Southern Miss for more than 27 years.

– James Whorton, professor of curriculum instruction and special education. After teaching in the Department of Special Education at the University of Florida for 11 years, Whorton came to Southern Miss in 1980 as chair of the Department of Special Education.

– John Harsh, professor of psychology. A member of the Southern Miss faculty since 1979, Harsh is the head of the Southern Miss Sleep Research Laboratory.

– Dana Thames, professor and chair of the Department of Curriculum, Instruction and Special Education. Thames is the recipient of numerous grants and training contracts, including a recent $135,000 grant award by the National Science Foundation Grant Summer S.C.I.E.N.C.E Program.

– Susan King, administrative secretary in the Department of Psychology. An active member in the Alumni Association and Eagle Club, King has held many positions of leadership in the Association of Office Professionals and the Staff Council.

– J.T. Johnson, director of the Center for Research and Support in the office of the vice president for research. Johnson also holds an academic appointment in the Department of Educational Research.

And don't forget, he was first *interim* dean (while they conducted another "bogus charade" search?), and was just named permanent dean recently.

I guess they had to make sure he was REALLY in ole Shelboo's corner before they rewarded him with the dean's position...just sickening.

And Mitch Berman, who is also listed on the committee, is Pierce's Associate Dean for EdPsych.

When Berman first arrived at USM, he was an independent thinker. All indications are that he has adapted to his environment since then.

Mitch is still an independent thinker. I have had lengthy conversations with him and he is in no one's pocket.....

There was a true search in CoEP but unfortunately there were few candidates. None measured up to Carl Martray.  I believe (although I may be wrong) that a candidate in the first search was offered the position and turned it down. (This has happened in the other college searches. Seems to me if those people who turned down the dean's positions would indicate why - I'm told more than one turned it down because of the current administration - then that would also be a powerful statement)

The second search turned up even fewer candidates and there were two finalists, Dr. Pierce and the other person whom no one supported. 4 out of the 5 units in CoEp supported Dr. Pierce for dean. Dana Thames' unit did not.

If you remember, it took a very long time for SFT to announce Pierce as dean after the search committee made their recommendation. Rumor had it that SFT didn't want him and had plans to announce Dana Thames as interim dean. Then he fired Glamser and Stringer. SFT was clearly surprised by the uproar after that and obviously could not name his daughter as interim.

This makes sense...

Carl Martray=product of national search

Willie Pierce (or Dana Thames)=product of Thames search

Until things change at USM, no viable candidates from outside "the family" will take any of these upper administration positions.  Just sad, sad, sad....

Bingo!  I heard from 2 very reliable sources that it was a "done deal" but then the events of March unfolded, and even SFT couldn't be that outlandish (maybe he does have a few limits - you wouldn't know it by most of his other actions).  The majority of people don't support SFT or DGT, but are afraid to speak out -- that's what happens when nepotism is imposed.  They've said that Pierce is just the CoEP Dean until he decides to retire, and then who gets the nod?? National search - possibly. Who's tapped to be Dean -- DGT. With the highest merit pay given, she needs to live up to what her daddy (sorry, that's supposed to be the Provost, right?) has determined to be her Merit.

Reorganization attracts USM dean candidate

American Senior Writer jbraswell@hattiesb.gannett.com

The clustering of health-related disciplines at the University of Southern Mississippi attracted Jerry Thomas to consider leaving the professorship he holds at Iowa State University.

Thomas, chairman of the department of health and human performance, interviewed Tuesday and today for dean of USM's new College of Health.

"I like the idea of a College of Health," he said. "I think that's an interesting concept. I like the units that are in there."

Academic reorganization will consolidate nine degree-granting colleges into five.

The restructuring does away with the College of Nursing and merges it into the College of Health. About 200 nursing students protested the change shortly after president Shelby Thames announced it in January.

Academic organization won't impact the strength of the nursing program, Thomas said.

"Nursing is an important unit," he said. "It's the biggest unit in the college. I think nursing will fare well."

Figures provided by USM in January showed the College of Nursing had 882 majors compared to 1,928 in the College of Health and Human Sciences, which includes community health, family and consumer sciences, hospitality management, human performance and recreation and social work.

Interviews for dean of the new college continue today with Stephen Oshrin, chairman of the USM speech and hearing sciences department. That department is moving from the liberal arts college to the new health college.

Donald P. Zingale, the third candidate, will be on campus next week. He is dean of the College of Health and Human Services at San Francisco State University.

While the health interviews are being held, the College of Education and Psychology search committee will decide this week whether to recommend hiring Rex Morrow or continue the search.

"We're at a decision point and have to do that," said Willie Pierce, committee chair.

Morrow, a department chair at Illinois State University, is the only candidate interviewed for education dean.

The committee in the College of Business and Economic Development wrapped up its interviews of four candidates Tuesday.

USM officials last week named Elliott Pood of the University of North Alabama as dean of the College of Arts and Letters and Rex Gandy of the University of Idaho as dean of the College of Science and Technology.

I also think Jerry Thomas withdrew is application for the dean's position in CoH after interviewing on campus. He may have been the one to write a strong letter about why he withdrew. Any one else have those details?

Do you suppose HA or CL would call these former candidates and get statements?

The HA, CL, or SH should do that.  I think the letter that we continue to hear about but have not been able to see would tell a lot about the precarious positions all the Deans are in.

I am repeating sources from within the College here, but was told that the day after he interviewed on campus with Tim Hudson as Provost he read in the newspaper about the switch in provost positions/people from the coast to Hattiesburg and said if the administration couldn't even tell him that much about what was going on, he was not interested in working for them.

I dont know the answer to this, but it's worth reminding ourselves that the last "outside search" brought us Elliott Pood, the Great Manager of Faculty. Maybe the operative word in question is "when is there ever going to be a true outside search?"
