Faculty & staff are in for a rude awakening--the University is dropping several benefits currently offered, and you won't find out unless you ask! Not to mention the hike in the health insurance...Why such secrecy? Everyone needs to pay a visit to Human Resources and see what's really going on.
Hikes in health insurance are happening in many state systems today (we had one in South Carolina last year, which applied to all state agencies, not just the universities).
Such hikes are well publicized, in my experience.
Are we talking about an increase (or a restriction of coverage) specific to USM? Or just a failure to publicize system-wide changes at USM?
The only thing that is being publicized is the health insurance increase..the others are not being told, unless you call Human Resources and ask. We will not be able to cover our families with life insurance, I know that. It is fishy that a mail-out hasn't been sent letting us know about these changes.
The interesting part of the original post was the exhortation to go over to HR and see for yourself. Surely no one was dumb enough to stroll in there and say "Hey, I just read on Fire Shelby. . ." or even "I heard. . ." Talk about walking into a trap!
(Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they're not really after you!)

It is a complete failure to publicize changes. Dvorak is trying to lay low until he is gone, when the bomb drops. There is no harm in asking questions about things we have the right to know, and they are obligated to tell us. That's how I found out! I spoke with Kameron Dale, the benefits person over there.
I will not be so ignorant to fly off the handle and call you a TROLL. However, when you initially posted this thread you gave people a false sense of something BAD happening.
Your scare seemed sensible! Well, I too have been fooled by the rabbitt hunts. My question to someone other than Dvorak and other than Dale was to a person we all know and like. My question was in accord with your scare.
The answer was-- The USM does not control the cost of medical insurance. USM has neither the authority nor power to increase rates on health insurance. The state and state alone controls how much it will pay to the insurance company.
In regards to the other benefits you speak of the answer was that no benefits were going to be taken away from anyone who currently has the benefits you speak of. There are benefts that will not be offerd any longer due to the cost tot he University. The same things are happening at Ole Miss and MSU and this has been confirmed.
Now I give you this information because based on your message you had a number of people in my department upset and I had to go to HR and ask.
My advice SMDTD is before you make these serious statments as a tacit attempt to anger the staff do you home work. I for one as a staffer do not openly invite your action because I do not have protection.
