HATTIESBURG -- The University of Southern Mississippi's Jenny Watson, Angela Cutrer, Lisa Mader and Valerie Craig won the "Public Relations Innovations" first-place award for the recently completed university-wide "Southern Miss Web Design Project." The recognition was one of 17 brought home by The University of Southern Mississippi's Department of Marketing and Public Relations from the College Public Relations Association of Mississippi (CPRAM) annual conference held May 24-25 in Natchez. "We're excited about the acknowledgment from CPRAM," said Mader, director of Southern Miss marketing and public relations. David Tisdale, assistant director for news and marketing, won first place in sports stories with his "Southern Miss football team chaplain gives Golden Eagles spiritual lift" and second place with his "Chattanooga man's love for Southern Miss football team inspires donation." She took home first place in the PowerPoint presentation category for "AP Style in a PR World," while Rouse and Mader placed second for "Brand Identity." In the tabloid publication category, Cutrer and Kemp won second for the October and November editions of "Update." In the creative partners category, Mader, Cutrer and Kemp worked with Beau Rivage's Mary Cracchiolo; Southern Miss Marketing and Public Relations assistant Leigh Anne Wilson and editorial assistant Landy Laird; Symphony Orchestra Director Jay Dean; and the College of Arts and Letters' Angela Kilcrease to take home the first-place award for "Placido Domingo to Perform."
CPRAM awards really do recognize the staff artists, layout people, web designers & others that generate a lot of material that every department on campus uses every day. Overall, USM's materials are high quality stuff.
I'm not talking about "propaganda" here, folks. I'm talking about the publications (print & web) that recruit prospective students & promote the University as a university. That's really the lion's share of what's done in PR.
Kudos to the PR staffers who work so hard behind the scenes on those publications.

Let me add my "kudos" here. These are awards for the "little people behind the big people" (as we used to call ourselves when I worked at USM).
Note to SFT: by "little people," I'm not referring to you! Really, I'm not.

How "hateful!" Kinda puts me in mind of a song...
Short People got no reason Short People got no reason Short People got no reason To live
They got little hands Little eyes They walk around Tellin' great big lies They got little noses And tiny little teeth They wear platform shoes On their nasty little feet
Well, I don't want no Short People Don't want no Short People Don't want no Short People `Round here
Short People are just the same As you and I (A Fool Such As I) All men are brothers Until the day they die (It's A Wonderful World)
Short People got nobody Short People got nobody Short People got nobody To love
They got little baby legs That stand so low You got to pick 'em up Just to say hello They got little cars That go beep, beep, beep They got little voices Goin' peep, peep, peep They got grubby little fingers And dirty little minds They're gonna get you every time Well, I don't want no Short People Don't want no Short People Don't want no Short People 'Round here
Like Mader really had any input on this. Yes the people that work for her arer good! Note my emphasis "the people thatWORK for her," she does not work!!!!!
She has earned the fall over your feet award from the PPC!
Invictus, that was great!!!!! I forgot about that song. Don't Want No Little People... That should be sung at every future demonstration. Sort of like the national anthem.
I will never be able to sing this song. I know this is all in fun, but two of the "biggest" men it was ever my privilege to know, one my wonderful grandfather and one an eminent historian, epigrapher, author, scholar, and all around dam fine human being, both were about 5'3" -- It's all in the heart and the brain.

(not that I'm overtall myself)"
Notice how the tone of the lyric changes midway to:
Short People are just the same As you and I (A Fool Such As I) All men are brothers Until the day they die (It's A Wonderful World)

Thank you all for such kind words. Personally, the most enjoyable part of my job is working with "partners" to help create something for the community. It was nice that CPRAM recognized our efforts not once, but several times.
CPRAM story: While at the conference, Melanie Kemp (who has since left the university) and I got locked out on our balcony of the hotel at 1 a.m. We were taking a smoke and didn't know the door locked. It was such a gosh-awful thing because it was so funny and so stupid. I sat in a plastic chair, my feet up on the railing, puffing on my cig, thinking not how do we get out of this mess, but "dang, we can't read FireShelby out here."
This site really helped me learn what others think (accurately or inaccurately!) Thanks again, and good luck to you all.
Good luck to you all and I pray the university heals quickly. I know that's asking a lot, but so many have been hurt that it's painful to even try to comprehend it all.
