Below is the text of an email sent out to USM students. This is when you need to plan a protest! Protest the "glory" that is Shelby Thames, protest the "glory" that is the current SGA adminstration. There can be no "robust" future for USM with Shelby at the helm:
Founder's Day Celebration
Founder's Day at The University of Southern Mississippi is a time to honor its past and those who have made outstanding contributions to its students, faculty, and staff since its founding on March 30, 1910, but it is also a time to celebrate the future of Southern Miss--where it is going and what it will become. Founder's Day will be observed Tuesday, March 30, 2004, beginning at 2:30 p.m. on the north lawn of the Aubrey K. Lucas Administration Building, with an open reception starting at 3:30 p.m.
Vice President for Student Affairs Dr. Joe Paul will be the featured speaker expounding the gloried past as a springboard for our robust future. Paul will be followed by the Student Government Association's outgoing president Jared Loftus, who will reflect on his year as SGA president and the many accomplishments made by the SGA. The outgoing SGA attorney general will then direct the installation of the 2004-2005 SGA officers.
To add to the excitement, this year, everyone is encouraged to come and enjoy cake and other refreshments, and as part of this year's festivities, there will be a drawing for Southern Miss merchandise for attendees wearing their black and gold. This will be a time for students, faculty, staff, and the Hattiesburg community to celebrate Southern Miss and its future.
Classes will not be dismissed; however we hope available students, faculty, and staff will attend to mark this day in our history and to congratulate the newly elected SGA officers. If appropriate to class material or subject matter, faculty members are welcome to bring their students.
Later that evening, the first Official Ring Ceremony will take place in the Polly Stout Room of the J.B. George University Commons. The first student recipients will receive the newly unveiled official college rings.
Sounds like a good time for the students to remind the new SGA just exactly who they are supposed to stand for. By the way, does anyone know if the SGA still has a council with a member from each of the organizations on campus in it? They used to as recently as 2001.
Can someone suggest at the meeting on Thursday night that the student's have a protest on the 30th. Truthfully, that would be the kind of embarassment that the Shelby Camp would abhor. Let's cause him a little of his own medicine!
Someone let me know if this protest on March 30 goes through...I'm announcing the possibility of a protest on my email listserv that goes out to about 100 people, though not all local.
Foundation Day Protest is a definite. We will not chant or have signs of questionable language. We will silently hold our signs. We discussed wearing masking tape over our mouths. I think it will be in front of Alum. House.
Can I bring my "Down With Thames, Up With 'The Cause'" sign? And my "Thames is a Power Hungry Dictator from Hell" sign? Or how about my "We're here to speak for the dorks on campus" sign?

sound good eddy, just remember we are trying to look decent. We want to shed the "radical hippy" stereotype.
