Founder's Day will be observed Tuesday, March 30, 2004, beginning at 2:30 p.m. on the north lawn of the Administration Building.
Vice President for Student Affairs Dr. Joe Paul will be the featured speaker. Paul will be followed by the SGA's outgoing president Jared Loftus, who will reflect on his many accomplishments. The outgoing SGA attorney general will then direct the installation of the 2004-2005 SGA officers.
To add to the excitement, this year, everyone is encouraged to come and enjoy cake and other refreshments, and as part of this year's festivities, there will be a drawing for Southern Miss merchandise for attendees wearing their black and gold. This will be a time for students, faculty, staff, and the Hattiesburg community to celebrate Southern Miss and its future.
Classes will not be dismissed; however we hope available students, faculty, and staff will attend to mark this day in our history and to congratulate the newly elected SGA officers.
Everyone please go. Wear your Glamser/Stringer buttons. Tell your future SGA officers that you want them to do a good job of REPRESENTING YOU.
Show the community this issue is still a very grave concern at our university.
Everyone needs to attend this demonstration! The media will be there, and will definitely have all eyes on the crowd. This is the time to show the community that this issue will not go away!
If there is not a very very large contingent of protestors, then the media will slam the demonstration as a failed brou ha ha by a few disguntled "whiney" and "spoiled" liberal pinko brats.
I would think twice about it unless I had at least 200 plus students, and even that will look palry.
It needs to be 500 or more. THEN it will be very effective indeed.

I disagree...there is power in even a few numbers. The point is not to make a "splash" every time. The point is to not let up...keep the story in the media. Sure, get as many as you can, but keep the heat on!
Remember to tell everyone you know to come to the demonstration today. It is not limited to students, faculty, & staff, anyone can come. This will be one of our best opportunities to show USM's supporters that the issue is not dead. We need to show the whole community that we will not stop until there is change!

Ditto! I'll spread the word on my website and through my email listserv!
I'm asking everyone on my email list who can't physically attend today's demonstration to send an email to Shelby (Shelby.F.Thames@usm.edu) telling him that they do not support his tactics nor his administration. I'm calling it the "virtual demonstration." Please join in if you feel moved and able to do so!

Just talked to one of the organizers...he was already at the dome...he was talking to someone else, so I had difficulty hearing him as he chatted with me and the other person.
I told him to contact as many reporters as he could identify and tell them about the Joe Paul situation.

No, it's supposed to start at 2:30 pm CST. And I do know that Joe Paul will be asked questions about his visit to Texas A&M to apply for the VP for Student Affairs job. Great timing, Fire Shelby!

Those questions will be asked by The Hattiesburg American reporter, at least, though he may pull the old "no comment" routine. Let's see what happens...

Yes, I talked to him just as it was beginning...bad grammar on my part--the past tense slip.
I could hardly hear him because so many voices were in the background. Sounds like it is a pretty huge event. He assured me he would find reporters and talk to them--inform them about JP.

I think you will find that many of us are teaching . . . and are acutely concious of the accusations that students are being "stirred up" by faculty. I just checked in between classes to see how things were going -- please don't assume because some of us are not there that we are neither interested nor active in those areas where we can exert influence.
