Two protest ideas: Tea bags and Brooms

These are two protest ideas that can be ongoing.  These can be in addition to the student protests on campus.

Idea number one:

The overarching message of the Boston Tea Party was that colonists would not accept tyranny.  Other groups have seized this theme and have mailed representatives tea bags.  Let's start a tea bag campaign.  Everyone mail at least one tea bag to Shelby's office and tell him that he must listen to faculty, students, and alumni, that he can't run the university arbitrarily.

Is this idea feasible?   What do you think?

Idea number two:

In various towns across the nation, during election time, citizens plant brooms in their front yard. The message is to sweep out the current office holders and bring in new leadership.

Couldn't we go to the dollar store and buy some $1 brooms, and plant them (handle end down) around campus?  We know that Shelby has USM's custodians out ripping down flyers, but what will they do if 1,000 brooms show up on campus on any given day?  They can't just cram them in a garbage can.  Also, people could plant brooms in their own front yards.  Then Shelby and Co. could do nothing about the message that is sent by the brooms--he can't send his custodians onto private property to remove brooms.

These are ideas that we can work on in addition to the student protests--and the student protests have been very effective.  These ideas are meant to be in addition to student protests, not to detract from them.

So, chime in.  What do you think about a tea-bag mailing campaign and a clean-sweep campaign?

I think they are both great ideas. Maybe the tea bags and brooms can be taken to the student protest too.  It would have a nice media twist and would make the point.  I like the idea of the brooms in people's yards.  That would spread it out where if anyone tried to remove them from the yards - it would be an invasion of private property.  Let's sweep Thames and Co. out of the USM community.

And there's always the plausible deniability that you're just cleaning your yard (office, deck, etc.)!

Great idea!  I think the tea bag idea would be so effective if students would take Shelby up on his "open door" policy and each take a tea bag to his office.  In fact, another effective idea would be to coordinate it one day when you know he will be in the office, and have one student scheduled every 10 minutes to take him a tea bag and say a very short, prepared speech explaining what it represents.  Alert the media ahead of time, and you will get results!

Shelby has disrupted life on USM's campus, so it's time to show him what disruption is all about.

did I miss something? This IS a joke right?

These are ridiculous symoblic moves that sway no one and make us look like fools and hippies.

Don't jump on me yet and just listen.

You need to get parents and relatives to write write write write and then write some more to the IHL board (each and every one of them, Klumb too), Trent Lott, Thad Cochern, your local senators/reps for Mississippi, and Haley Barbour. I would also write the rumored new USM IHL candidates (Mixon and Jim Payne).

That is the ONLY thing that will do any good, except of course good ole fashioned investigative reporting, which our newspapers and TV stations obviously are incapable or scared to do.

To think gimmick moves like brooms to harken the American Revolution will resonate is fairly simple minded, though I do understand well intened.

I'm not going to jump on you, or refer to YOU as simple-minded, though you did me, but maybe you should take a moment to hear ME out.

In what part of my post did I say that we could EITHER write letters OR use symbolic gestures???

I don't recall saying such, and never would have suggested such.

Symbolic gestures carry power--I hardly see how brooms or tea bags make us look "hippy" or "fools."  Nor do I think that seeing the situation at USM as tyranny is "hippy"-like or "foolish."

This forum was created as a place where people could consider ideas, discuss the crisis at USM, possibly engage in activism.  You might not like all of the ideas presented here--that's a given.  But perhaps you should consider voicing your objections in a bit nicer way.  Just a suggestion...

And let me also say that we don't need to turn the unity we are seeing from people from all walks of life who are defending Glamser and Stringer into a battle between "liberals" and "conservatives."  People from all parts of the political spectrum are united in this fight.  We don't need to be divided by political rhetoric that serves no purpose but to divide us, which is what Shelby would love to see happen.

I like the tea bag idea despite the fact that the 12 yr. old pervert in me thought of something different.

Anyway, if you mail it to him make sure--as the original poster wrote--that you make a simple statement because you don't want Shelby calling in the FBI on you for mail fraud or the like.

The broom idea is a great idea. If possible, find a tree close to the Dome and hang them from the limbs. Lean a few dozen against the main entrance as well.

I surely didn't meant to say you are simple minded. Neither of us are.

I have I think said right here this has nothing to do with liberal/conservative.

And, you are right, doing such "symbolic" acts that the ordinary public would view differently than us does NOT preclude more effective letter writing.

I stand corrected on that and yes, I can see that I was a bit worked up. I really want a united front that is the MOST effective in swaying the IHL board.

I still feel these symbolic moves will not help, but they probably don't hurt much either. It would make the news.
