spyware on our computers

Does anyone have any information about the probable SPYWARE on our computers?  I heard that Shelby fired Candy Santel, the last Chief Technology Officer (director of iTech when it was called OTR) when she refused to have spyware installed on USM faculty and staff computers. I have now heard several reports that seem to validate this possibility.  Has anyone run a "spyware detection program" on their university computer?  I'd be interested in verifying this.  I asked a Chief Technology Officer from an out-of-state university whether this was becoming common practice in universities as it is in the business world -- and he said absolutely not.  Folks, this is equivalent to wire tapping!

I run an anti spyware program pretty regularly on my computer here and haven't run into any major problems beyond the usual commercial spyware stuff. But it would be nice to confirm your anecdote about Santel.
