"USM enrollment grew 4% from last Fall ['02] to this Fall ['03], and it grew 3% from last Spring ['03] to this Spring ['04]. So, basically, our enrollment grew 7% over the last year."

I worked for Thames’ Propaganda Minister—for less than a week. I quit a job I loved the day after my first one-on-one session with the virago. Five minutes into our meeting it was clear to me she didn’t know her butt from a hole in the ground. I remember the most salient quote she made that day was, “What’s important is not what you know, but who you know,” which, I’m sure, sums up her entire career nicely.
I think it sometimes goes unnoticed that Thames first eviscerated the staff long before he got to the faculty. In my case, I left, and soon after, my spouse, who was faculty member and just a few months away from receiving tenure, left as well.

Great post...brings up a good question. How many staff members have left since Thames took office? Do we know how many openings there are for staff positions? And why has Staff Council stopped meeting this year (according to their website...no minutes posted for AY03-04). Anyone?
The Lisa "Math Wiz" Mader quote was in the H'burg American. I don't have any idea of the date but remember thinking how ridiculous this was when I read it.

Staff members at USM are dedicated people. Many of them could leave the uni and go out into the private sector and make twice what they are making at USM. We need to say "THANKS" to these men and women when we come in contact with them. I know some of the administrative assistants in liberal arts--they go beyond the call of duty and contribute so MUCH to keep their departments afloat. They deserve kudos for their love of their work and this university.
