What do you think of this protest idea?

I think it would be VERY effective if there were protests right outside of the President's house on Jamestown Road (it IS USM property, after all).  As long as protesters stay a respectable distance from his house, I think it will send a very powerful message and also drive Shelby crazy!  He would definitely take notice of this.  And so would his frou-frou neighbors.

Just an idea...let me know if anyone does this, and I'll alert the media!

I think this is a terrible idea.  His wife is a lovely lady and has endured enough with all the innuendo.  His grandchildren are often at his home.  I think it would backfire in public sentiment.

I agree.

It would be nothing for him to use the media to say he is being attacked and harassed at his home, thus swaying people to have sympathy for him.

A suggestion.  How about a ring around the dorm of protesters, each holding signs and forming a circle around the dorm (save for exits, so the police can't say you're blocking an entrance).  That way, should Thames and any supporters come or go, they have no choice but to be confronted with you.

That's exactly what I was thinking about!  It can be a respectful protest.  And his house is PAID FOR by the university (and therefore, is paid for by your tuition dollars).  He's been hiding out for too long.  His own faculty have to take out an AD in the newspaper, for crying out loud!

I still think it can be done in a respectful manner...and can be very effective.

For those who have little brothers, sisters, nephews, etc. or neighborhood kids, have them go up to Shelby's house with a can and ask for a donation of intergrity for their future education at USM.

I don't think that it would be a good idea even to hold a quiet, peaceful protest at someone's home at this time. It could be used against us, and even though the property belongs to the university, it is funtioning as a private residence.

I agree. While the president's home is technically public property, it is a family residence. Dr. Thames' family was not responsible for the Stringer/Glamser debacle.

I might also add that the neighborhood is occupied by some fine people who shouldn't be bothered/abused that way. The neighbors weren't responsible for the problems at the university, either. But you could lose any sympathy they might have for your cause in a heartbeat.

Keep the demonstrations & protests on campus or in nonresidential public areas. And be sure to get the permits if you exceed the legal limit for public gatherings.

I would not go to his home.  That takes things to a fine line between protest and harassment.  He reads the newspapers.  He is not escaping the "heat" of the protests.

Actually, the idea has come up from time to time. We decided it wouldn't be the thing to do as it would esentially be stooping to his level, and we really don't have a beef with his family.

That said, the notion is viscerally satisfying
