It is imperative that we continue our activism. Today's victories are significant--probably more than any of us expected a week ago.
We have to keep on writing. If you wrote a letter to the college board prior to today, please consider writing again. If you haven't written yet, please write now. Contacts are listed on the Activism page of this website.
Student protests and letters to the college board and to newspapers turned the tide in favor of our professors. Let's not think the battle is over--our professors' jobs are still on the block. It is up to us to see that they are back in their offices soon.
Attend the protest Tuesday. Continue to discuss here and in letters to editors and the college board the damage that Shelby&Co. are doing to our university. Do not stop until we hear that the final two victories have been won: Shelby dethroned and Glamser and Stringer reinstated.
Today marked a huge victory for our two professors and for USM. We cannot let up. If anything, we need to intensify our activism--you can bet that Shelby&Co. will be pulling out all stops.
I have no doubt that were it not for the untiring efforts of people like FS and AH, the USM students, faculty, staff, and alumni, and fair minded people in the Hattiesburg community, around the state and around the country that Gary and I would have been history by now. It has been a very humbling and gratifying experience. May God bless you all.

Well, you two have been an inspiration to all concerned with academic freedom. Anyone who really wants to be inspired should listen to the audio recording available on this site. Particularly inspiring are the comments of the young untenured professor with small children who nonetheless was willing to take a very public stand. I also admire the outspokenness and eloquence -- and courage -- of Noel Polk. This whole event needs to be written up someday as a textbook example of threats to academic freedom and how to oppose them. I hope that FS will leave this site up on the net for a long time to come; it provides a very valuable historical record of a very unfortunate chapter in recent academic history.

Thank you! We will keep up this effort until both of you are back in your offices and in front of your students. Words cannot express the appreciation and admiration I feel for you and Dr. Stringer. We couldn't be fighting for two better professors.

A hobby lobby package was inadvertently (!) left at Javawerks a short time ago - it contains a bucket of chalk and some very clever pins - maybe someone could pick it up and put it to good use today?
