Not everyone is going to attend a rally, put an "Impeach Thames" bumper sticker on a car, wear one of the very cool Polk/McMillan t-shirts, stand a visible broom upside down, or even write signed letters to newspaper editors or board members. Many of the people on this website have and will continue to do these things. Those that have been out front activists cannot be commended enough and their efforts are truly making a difference. However, some people cannot or will not because of their positions in the community. Some cannot or will not because of the much touted fears of reprisal. Some cannot or will not because it's just not their style. That doesn't mean that these people can't be or aren't being effective. Everyone has individual spheres of influence - business dealings, community groups, places of worship, school functions, neighborhood gatherings, golf, dinner clubs, political meetings... A great deal is going on behind the scenes - don't rule out its importance!
Determine your sphere of influence and make the most of it.

But anyone and everyone who can attend the protest should. We don't want to give the impression that the problems at USM have been resolved or that interest in the issues is waning.
Sphere, you are right. We all do have different styles. And everyone needs to do their part, whatever their style. I don't expect Bobby Chain to show up at next week's rally wearing his "Impeach Thames" button, but who knows what kind of influence he has already exerted on the College Board behind the scenes? This is just one example. The students themselves said Joe Paul and Tim Hudson were smiling at them and saying that that they were "glad to see them" at the protests. This speaks volumes! Who knows what they are doing behind the scenes (hopefully, more than just trying to leave USM!)?
But, equally important (if not more important, in my eyes!) are people like Noel Polk, Neil McMillen, and Doug Chambers who are working publicly to exert pressure and keep this issue alive. They are to be commended, especially given the ramifications of possible loss of their jobs, etc. Then, all of the faculty who voted no-confidence in Thames are to be thanked for their bravery.
And all of the concerned alums, friends of USM, and faculty from other universities are to be commended for writing letters to the editors, redirecting your money to the professors' legal fund, and getting the word out to the national media. You help us to get the message across that this is about so much more than USM...it's about basic freedom of speech.
And, the wonderful students at USM who are giving their own time and money to make signs, order stickers, attend meetings and protests...you are just amazing! Most USM students I know have jobs, full schedules, etc., so I know that this is a huge sacrifice for you. You are the lifeblood of this movement...I know that you inspire us all.
Finally, I can't thank Fire Shelby enough. What a great community you have pulled together (minus a few awful trolls...or perhaps one schizophrenic troll ). I know so many people who read this message board for breaking news and to find out what people are thinking. Even the Clarion Ledger is taking notice now!
So, everyone IS making a difference in their own way. The important thing in my mind is that you DO SOMETHING. Write a letter to the College Board, attend a protest, send an anonymous donation to the professors' legal defense fund...whatever form your support takes, it is important that we keep the issue in the forefront and show our support for Glamser and Stringer, especially in these weeks leading up to the hearings.
