Does anyone have a copy of the Monty Pilawsky book? I know some former CISE members have the book, but it's a must read for anyone who wants to see how history repeats itself. Exit 13 stands for the former Hattiesburg highway exit. Pilawsky went to Dartmouth after being at USM but he left there awhile ago.
The book is about the corruption, nepotism, and cronyism which was symbollic of USM in the past --- hmmm . . ..
Been there. I was here when that book was written and the McCain Adm. was in charge. I have posted of that era on this very board.
I didn't know Monty but I saw him around campus.
Jimmy Buffet and Fingers were around then.
I wonder how many people on this board have even heard of "Exit 13", much less have read it?
Go look. BTW, the highway exit 13 off the interstate was changed after the book was released. It never was a big seller since no one cares about the state of Mississippi. People just think such goings on, as we see now, are commonplace in the land of ignorant racist rednecks.
Profs in those days could be fired if they were a democrat. McCain ruled with an iron fist but even he didn't quite go as far as what we are seeing now, probably because he didn't have the "technology" to eavesdrop that the current adm. has.
There used to be a copy in the Honors College libraray (McCain Room 211). I'm sure there must be a copy in the Cook Library. I've read it. It's a great book. Especially in its telling of the Clyde Kennard story.

The Cook Library has three copies (two of which are checked out), the Gulf Coast Library has one copy, and the McCain Library has two noncirculating copies in the Mississippi Collection.
When I came to to USM six years ago - to teach, not as a student - I bought a copy of Exit 13 in the Hub Bookstore. They may still have copies. Otherwise ask Maggie, who manages the book section of that store, to order more. If it is still in print I'm sure she will get more copies.
One other common thread from Exit 13 to today is Bill Scarborough who was also charged by the McCain Administration with "contumacious conduct" and won his case! It is no accident that he has been up front against the new dictator Thames.
Picked the book up yesterday...it is a good read. Helps put some things in perspective. The section on trying to fire Scarborough was very interesting, especially since the advisory council ended up exonerating him and condemning the dean that was trying to fire him. Wouldn't that be something if that happened with Glamser and Stringer! Though I don't know if Scarborough would like some quotes like "I'm a segregationist, no apologies, no denials." to get around too much. Regardless, this book contains an interesting look at why Mississippi lags so far behind other states in almost everything, and though it was published in the early 80’s, much of the book could just as well be talking about today.

Actually, I don't think Scarborough would care at all if that comment got out...considering EVERYONE on campus has read the book.
Knowing Bill, I would say that his views have evolved, though. Let's not try to turn this thread into an attempt to crucify a HUGE opponent of Thames because he uttered something three decades ago with which most, if not all, of us would disagree.
Bill has been at the vanguard of the fight against Thames. Not excusing his thirty+ year old statement you quoted, but let's stay focused on what we are fighting for and quit trying to divide people with unrelated topics.
Just my two cents.
And if this thread degrades into an argument over whether Bill Scarborough is a racist or not, it will be cleaned up for not being on topic.
I agree. Let's not take down Bill. Despite his past views he is a great supporter of acedemics and as we have seen will step up to bat for anyone in the academic circle who is wrongly accused.
I didn’t mean to start something up about Scarborough, just a side of him (his past) I didn’t know. I’m sure he has long changed those opinions. He is just one of the few people in the book that I actually knew so it made it interesting. The book also said he was a fine scholar. And you are right about parking!!!
