Professor shortage may hurt USM nursing program
Admission to doctoral programs in nursing at the University of Southern Mississippi could be curtailed because of a paucity in teaching faculty on the Hattiesburg campus, a USM professor of nursing says.
The School of Nursing should be able to accommodate the 19 nursing students already enrolled, but recruiting eight professors is proving difficult at the university, which is locked in controversy involving USM President Shelby Thames’ leadership.
“There are so many options for nurses with such a national shortage that it’s hard to compete,” said Bonnie Harbaugh, an assistant nursing professor. “We are at a crisis level. The campus discord is affecting our ability to get candidates and it’s discouraging.”
The College of Nursing was moved out of the College of Health in the mid 90's precisely to aid in the recruiting of administrators and nursing faculty in a very tight field. The increased prestige and visibility of an independent college were seen as necessary for the program's survival. They were moved back into the College of Health in the reorganization without any consultation or understanding of why they needed to be independent.
The very good and popular dean left the campus last year, and the current director and assistant director have resigned their administrative positions and many faculty have left or are leaving. It may be necessary to stop graduate admissions for lack of senior faculty and to cut undergraduate admissions in half for lack of faculty.
In two short years the biggest and best nursing program in the state has been seriously damaged. This is just one of the stories not being told about the poorly thought out and implemented reorganization plan. The departures of experienced and highly qualified faculty in many programs across the campus have done long term damage to the university that the public does not see.

There are many here among us who believe that the systematic degradation of the quality of programs at USM is precisely why the IHL board selected Shelby Thames in the first place. He is doing quite well at what he was hired to do, which is ensure that USM never again challenges the primacy of the University of Mississippi or Mississippi State University.
I said that the day Thames was annointed president & every single thing that's happened since then supports this view.
Full article on crisis in nursing program. This is a huge loss to USM. All nursing students should be at the protest tonight asking for their College to be reinstated!
