Here's a suggestion for CSUSM
Permalink Closed

I think that if you organize, elect officers, get a faculty advisor to assist you but not to limit you, you can have a very real case against having your signs torn down and other forms of intimidation you are experiencing.

Now let me state that I don't think it is fair, and I know exactly what you are talking about--I have always seen posters around campus--even posters for businesses in Hattiesburg, like Rage Skater Park.  So, if you organize as a bona fide student organization on campus, and then if Shelby refuses to allow you to post signs, you have a REAL CASE on which you can take action.

Plus, organizing with a faculty advisor will give you legitimacy in other ways, making it easier to get a mailbox, take donations, etc.  If you organize, would you be able to request a portion of student activities fees for your organization?

I think the success that you folks have experienced thus far is great!  The way to build on that is to become a legitimate, organized, faculty advised group so that when someone DOES try to intimidate you, you can respond as a bona fide organization.

Does this make sense?  Believe me, this is not an attempt to knock anything you are doing, because I think you are doing a great job.  But if you jump through a few hoops and Shelby still has it out for you, you can have firm ground from which to respond.

Please don't think I am being critical, because that is not my intent.  I am just making a suggestion that may help you as your group grows.

Warmest regards,

Fire Shelby

(Everyone, please add your two cents.  This is just one person's opinion, hurriedly tapped out after giving a little thought to the problems these students are experiencing.)

Your advice sounds good.  I am keeping my fingers crossed, however, that the need for this organization may not exist for much longer!

I agree that at least the need for the group in the current crisis may pass.  But who knows what evil lurks around the corner.

I think these students have done a great job organizing, and I can perceive this organization having a LOOONG life as a counterbalance to SGA.  There will always be an SGA--it would be great to know that there will always be a CSUSM to keep an eye on SGA and to monitor fairness in many situations at USM.

Again, just my two cents.

definitely a good point. however, one of the reasons we haven't organized yet is that we don't want it to look like a "clique" or that it's coming from one department. however, given the current apathy of the SGA, there are discussions of forming and alternative "SGA" on campus, one that bothers with such issues as daycare for single moms on campus, etc. I'll keep everyone posted on that! Hope to see everyone this afternoon!

An alternative to SGA sounds like a good idea, since SGA is forming an alternative to the student newspaper!  THEY've set an interesting precedent!

Perhaps an official USM campus watchdog group is in order, but I am against CSUSM becoming an official group as it is now.

I don't really understand why you don't want to be a campus organization?  Almost all organized groups have a certain type of people.  I don't see anything wrong with an official organization. Since your name would be Concerned Students of USM, you could still take up the other issues that Cindy brought up about day care, etc.

I also vote for making it an official organization with the broad scope to address such issues like day care, etc.  I'm sure Doug Chambers or Noel Polk would be PROUD to be the faculty sponsor!  If my memory serves, you only need 10 students to sign as the "official" group (they may have changed the rules recently).

As I said before, the formation of a USM watchdog organization to address these issues (which definetly need addressing)is in order and would be prudent. However, I don't think that it would be productive for CSUSM to become an official organization, especially right now. CSUSM would not be as effective if it were an official organization for several reasons, including the risk of leaving faculty advisors and student officers open to possible intimidation. Furthermore, CSUSM is a group made up of diverse people with diverse interests and ideologies, but united and driven by a primary issue. Groups such as this are often temporary in nature--when the issue goes away, the group tends to dissolve. While the urge to make CSUSM official is understandable and may be an idea to look into in the future, to do so at this time would be inadvisable for many reasons, including but not limited to the reasons listed above.
