Just flipped through a copy of the USM Update that was in the lobby of my building (faculty/staff newspaper). It seems that Ms. Dana Thames received a Summer 2004 research grant, which I am told, comes with a stipend of about $8,000. The faculty member I spoke with told me that administrators (dept. chairs, etc.) are not supposed to be eligible. wth?
I thought Dept. Chairs weren't on 9 month contracts. With her Dept. on the brinks of losing NCATE accreditation, it seems odd that she'd have the time to take the summer off to do research - which is what that grant stipulates. She'll receive either 9 or 10 thousand since she's a full professor and what she has proposed to do must be completed in the timeframe given - which is this summer. Nice to know she thinks her dept. is running that smoothly. I think the grant was granted to allow her to look a little more scholarly since her research work is so minimal and ALIKE. Those 2 articles on this website didn't look like different research to me, but then again maybe she needs something to pump up that resume. Wonder where we could find hers?
