I can't believe that the Hattiesburg American didn't even show up at the protest yesterday. They just ran the same story that the CL ran??? So, the CL in Jackson could get a reporter there, but not the HA? I'm quickly losing any faith I ever had in the HA...Janet Braswell should be taken off the "USM beat" and replaced by someone who gives a d***.
I did see Riva Brown at the protest, and although I didn't see Braswell personally, but I was told by a couple of people that she was seen on campus around the time of the protest yesterday. Can anyone confirm this? Did anyone on this board actually see her or speak to her? I'm just curious.
stupid question. Why did you folks have faith in the first place in the American? I never would have. There are lots of people in this town that don't even read it (stunned me).

What are the other choices for local news? The Independent? WDAM? Your next-door neighbor?
Let's not forget that the American allowed its pages to be used as a bully pulpit for Thames to pursue the president's job to begin with. Whenever all the other applicants refused to comment on something or could not be contacted by a reporter, Thames was happy to give them plenty of sound bites. So there were articles that purported to be about one of the other candidates but ended up being an advertisement for Shelby Thames.
So why should anybody think that their editorial bias would change?
Apparently, there were articles written in the Hattiesburg American at the time of Shelby's inauguration that detailed the events in 1981 on the coast. I'm trying to get a hold of these articles as we speak, and will post them if I do find them.
Good luck in looking. I seem to remember that what was discussed was not the "incident" referred to here. Rather, it was former profs, administrators and staff who were under Thames. One story was about one chair or administrator being "awarded" a raise for raising enrollment, and another being chastised for a reduction in enrollment at another branch. Both tried to tell Thames that the REASON was merely the number of sections being offered, but he didn't listen.
Well, the next year, the story goes, the sections were reversed, so that the formerly losing campus had more sections. This time, that campus with more sections had an enrollment increase and the other one, lauded by Thames the year prior, had a big drop. All predicted by employees who knew the score. Supposedly, Thames never called the first administrator, who now presided over an course section driven enrollment increase, back into his office to commend him.
There were other stories of Hi Ho Silver (Au) and the omnipresent "log" that facutly had to fill out, detailing their activities each 15 minutes of the work day, including how long they spend in the bathroom.
I do not ever remember reading of the incident that led to Dr. Lucas making Thames step down.

My favorite was the photo of the female candidate visiting campus (I've forgotten her name). Right under it was an interview with Trent Lott saying how great Shelby would be for the job. Sort of obvious, yes?
